EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- An Egyptian soldier was shot and killed in the Sinai peninsula on Saturday, Egypt's army said.
Mustafa Jumaah, 21, was shot in the head by a sniper in the city of Sheikh Zuweid, Egyptian officials said.
Helicopters searched the area for the gunman, while Egyptian ground forces raided suspected militant strongholds near Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid in an ongoing crackdown against militants in Sinai.
Egyptian forces disrupted communications in the area to prevent militants from detonating explosives and coordinating with each other.
In El-Arish, Egyptian forces detained 28 suspected fugitives. A number of Palestinians who had entered Egypt through Gaza's smuggling tunnels were also detained, officials said.
Egyptian armed forces launched large scale military action against militants in Sinai earlier in September, in what officials described as the largest mobilization of force in the area since the 1973 war with Israel.
The army has killed around 100 Islamists in the area over the past two months, while militants have killed 58 policemen, 21 soldiers and 17 civilians there, according to an AFP tally.
