CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Egyptian police on Wednesday detained a suspected member of an Islamist group in the Sinai peninsula accused of plotting to assassinate interior minister Mohammad Ibrahim in early September.
Security sources told Ma'an that Nabil Al-Mughrabi was arrested in a raid on his home in al-Qayloubia.
Al-Mughrabi, who was an officer in the Egyptian marines in 1981, has been detained in the past after he was accused of planning the assassination of Anwar Sadat.
After 31 years in prison, he was released along with 500 people belonging to Islamist factions after a decree by then-president Mohammad Mursi, who was later deposed in a summer coup.
