JOHANNESBURG (AFP) -- South Africa has slammed Israel's plans to build new settler homes in east Jerusalem as pro-Palestinian activists launched an international campaign for the release of political prisoners.

"That arrangement there in Palestine keeps us awake," South Africa's Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane on Friday told members of Cosatu, the largest trade union which is a political ally of the ruling ANC party.

"The last time I looked at the map of Palestine, I could not go to sleep. Its dots, smaller that those of the homelands," she said referring to the former homelands in South Africa which were also known as bantustans created under apartheid to give blacks a sense of autonomy.

South Africa was chosen by pro-Palestinian activists for the launch of an international lobby seeking the release of 5,000 Palestinian political prisoners, including veteran leader Marwan Barghouti currently in Israeli detention.

The campaign was kicked off on October 25 at Robben Island, the former prison where anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years in jail.

"The Palestinian quest for self determination remains unfulfilled," said South Africa's top diplomat.

Since the fall of the whites-only apartheid regime in 1994, South Africa has been an outspoken critic of Israel, although it maintains diplomatic ties with the Jewish state.

Sad that she is unable to remember the years from 1999 to 2002 when Cape Towns massive police force hunted for a militant Muslim group held responsible for a four-year bombing campaign in the city, while warnings at that time that terrorism was spiralling out of control. Who did the they ask for help at that time, yea you knew did'nt you, it was the Israelis.

If majority black S/Africa is 'losing sleep'(empathy, conscience,PTSD etc)over white-Jewish,Boer,racist,apartheid Zionism occupying pluralistic,multi-cultural,Palestine & threatening the existance of Israel too, that's good! S/Africa will have more waking hours in each day,to DO SOMETHING about it on the UNSC/GA,BRICS podium before S/Africa is returned back to apartheid-rule TOO?

Someday we'll be able to say with relish, "Since the fall of the Jews-only apartheid regime." Israel already rules over more Palestinians than non-Palestinians. It's just a matter of time before this situation turns the collective stomach of the American Jewish community. Then bye bye big foreign aid, bye bye big weapons, and bye bye Security Council veto. The end game is ON!

Colonialism is colonialism. All Africans and many others in the third world know very well what it means. Soljenytsine wrote that colonialism is worse than totalitarism. Because totalitarism is based upon violence. Colonialism is based upon violence AND humiliation.

Wasn't Mali a former colony of France? They were embrasing the French as hero's when they helped them expel Islamic militants just last year. Since everyone likes to compare Israeli policy to Fascism and Nazism and claim that they are racists and ethnically cleansing the muslims in the occupied territories just remember the muslim side hasn't come up with anything creative aside from "resistance" which translates to violence. I would choose colonialism to Fundementalism any day.
