BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Iyad Burnat, star of the Oscar-nominated film 5 Broken Cameras, was among those shot by Israeli forces during the weekly protest in his village of Bilin on Friday.

Israeli forces opened fire on a demonstration against the separation wall four in Bilin on Friday afternoon, injuring four individuals including Iyad Burnat and two other members of his family. Dozens of others suffered from excessive tear gas inhalation.

Iyad was struck by two rubber-coated steel bullets in the thigh.

In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Burnat said that he was "fine."

He added in a separate post on Saturday that "the bullet that does not kill us makes us stronger."

Iyad Burnat is the brother of Emad Burnat, a Palestinian farmer whose film 5 Broken Cameras was nominated for an Academy Award in 2012. He was the first Palestinian to ever receive that honor.

Iyad Burnat is a leader of Bilin's protest movement and was a central protagonist of the documentary film.

The film follows Bilin villagers as they engage in a campaign of nonviolent resistance against Israeli authorities as they construct the separation wall through their village, confiscating large parts of the village lands in the process.

Since 2005, Bilin villagers have protested on a weekly basis against the Israeli separation wall that runs through their village on land confiscated from local farmers.

Previous protests by Bilin activists have forced the Israeli authorities to re-route the wall, but large chunks of the village lands remain inaccessible to residents because of the route.

Friday's protest also marked the 96th anniversary of the Balfour declaration, which declared British support for the "establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people."

Palestinians see the declaration as paving the way for the creation of the State of Israel at the expense of the land's indigenous inhabitants.

Are they ''hamming'' (excuse the expression) it up for the documentary that’s being made?

Ah yes, the weekly Bilin circus. A choreograhed affair that is so regular you can show up any week and almost set your watch to it.

Balfour declaration is a sign of provoking the Muslims to rage war against the western power. The Zionist agenda is evil. But if the Muslim Ummah stand their grounds firmly together, the evil will run towards the hell gates of fire.

All these Zionist posters here are a disgrace to humanity. That is the essence of Zionism, a disgrace to humanity. May the world be blessed soon with the demise of Zionism.

Reading through the comments it strikes me how people have no humanity. No compassion. Where are your hearts? This is a fellow human being, being Palestinian doesn't make one's pain any less than the pain experienced by another. One day we will all meet our Maker and answer to Him we must. Have a heart people, don't dehumanize suffering. Peace

Some of the comments above are stupid and lacking humanity. You people don't know what suffering is. Shame on you...

@1) Bona - The film 'Five Broken Cameras' has already been made, you can find it to purchase on Amazon, or other places on the internet. What you see here is the weekly demonstration against 'the wall', in the village of Bilin (W.Bank) around which the film centres. Neither the film nor the pictures you see here contain 'hamming', it's all real life. The film does contain some poignant moments, you see a small Palestinian child give a flower to an 'IDF' soldier & you see when life is taken away.

To Brian: Circus, that's right, and who are the clowns with the guns? Just a girl: Entirely agree, no hearts. Sitting on their overused couches, lacking even imagination to know what oppression might feel like for even ten long minutes. In solidarity with all Palestinians, still on occupied Palestnian land, and ones that were evacuated all around the world. @AnastasiaSongs

Dear friends from all over the world. I went to West Bank three years ago, and I lived there for six months. Before to arrive there I didn't read any book, neither I had any deep knowledge of the situation. I was just there to see and learn. Shortly, this is what I saw with my own eyes: - I saw jewish settlers throwing stones at palestinian children while they were going at school. - I saw a palestinian suffering from a heatstroke, helped from Israelian soldier (continue)

Palestinian people who arrived and saw the soldiers all around the man told me that the soldier had beaten him. But I was there, it wasn't true. - I saw israeli children, just 5-6 years old, chasing a 5 years old palestinian child, throwing stones at her. - I heard a 17 years old Palestinian commenting the death of 4 settlers with happines, cheering when he heard that one of the killed was pregnant. - I saw the blood of two suspected terrorist. IDF killled them, and destroyed their house (contin

the house was packed with children of several age. The holes made from the bulletts were all around. - I saw activists from all around the world. They had their idea of the conflict. They surely were way more prepared then me. Every week they held a demonstration against Israel. And every week they were pushing young palestinian children in the front rows. - I saw that palestinians had different streets from israeli. Narrows streets, without pavement. The wider streets were for settlers (cont)

I talked to israeli and palestinians. They were all complaining about something, accusing the counter part of something. The only thing they had in common was the hate. I can't tell how to solve this conflict. I'm in Italy. My ancestors weren't persecuted from half of the world before WWII neither my gparents were kicked out of their house after the 50'.I only know that what's going on in this area of the world, all those lies, all those blind belives, are a shame for the whole humankind.

The ziotrolls are almost always the first to post on Ma'an. Like someone is paying them to lie, distort, deny, and tell us to "look the other way." The lack of humanity they express ain't Jewish. It's pure zionism.

The Zionist occupation of Palestine is a international disgrace to all jews around the world. Israel's theft of palestinian land is an obvious violation of basic human rights. The entire world--except Israelis and Americans--know Israel is shamelessly stealing land. Wake up, Zionist thugs! Karma will catch up with you.

As an American who met with Iyad Burnat and his family in 2012, I was shocked and dismayed to hear of his being wounded by an Israeli soldier. Of course, these incidents are never reported in the U.S. mainstream media, so most Americans are unaware of the suffering of the Palestinians. This incident reveals the routine and callous disregard of human rights by the Israeli army. As an American, I stand with the good people of Bil'in in their struggle against Israeli apartheid.

This is the real face for the Israelis, they behave more aggressively than animals. The problem is that we don't often choose our neighbors, if we would, the Israelis would be last to choose.

I was in a public high school in the late 50s and recall watching a film to raise money for the Palestinian refugees living behind fences. Nothing has changed. The Palestinians are still behind fences. Thank the British for any conflict there. The land was confiscated and given to the Jewish refugees from Europe. During the war Canada dd not accept the Jews fleeing the holocaust. So boatloads were shipped to British controlled palistine. Land and homes were simply confiscated for them.

"5 Broken Cameras" is a documentary produced by a Palestinian and an Israeli. Iyad Burnat is not an actor but a man of peace just trying to help his village out and protect his and other families from the encroaching Israeli wall. He and others do this through non-violent demonstrations. Open minds and open hearts are needed to help all truly understand the Occupation and what it means on a daily basis.

If you haven't been to the Palestinian parts of Israel and seen the reality, you can't quite imagine it. It's blatantly unjust and "apartheid" is truly the only word for it. If you ever were in South Africa prior to 1993, you would be reminded now in Israel of how the system works against "the other".

I lived under German occupation for five years during WWII . We helped our Jewish countrymen to escape German persecution. The Jews in those days were treated the same as Palestinians to day by the Zionist occupiers for the last seventy years or so.
