BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A man was shot dead by Palestinian Authority police during an attempted arrest by officers east of Bethlehem on Monday.
Hasan Mubarak Abu Mheimeed was shot dead in al-Asakira village east of Bethlehem after resisting arrest, a PA police spokesman told Ma'an.
A police statement said that Abu Mheimeed was hiding out in the village and tried to run away.
Police officers shot him in the back and he was transferred to Beit Jala hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect, who was wanted for criminal offenses, was armed and tried to open fire at officers, the police spokesman added.
PA police said Abu Mheimeed has been a fugitive since 2005 after being accused of attempted murder and involvement in an armed clash between two families.
Several warrants have been issued for his arrest, including charges of impersonating a police officer, resisting arrest and opening fire at policemen.
