JERUSALEM (AFP) -- A rocket fired from the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip in the early hours of Monday hit a southern Israel community without causing damage or injuries, Israeli police said.

Bomb disposal experts found the "rocket fired from the Gaza Strip" in a community near the city of Ashkelon, according to police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld. Police said the projectile hit near a school bus stop.

Gaza government spokeswoman Isra Almodallal told Ma'an that Hamas had not confirmed or denied involvement in the incident.

On Sunday, Egyptian security officials told Ma'an that Hamas had fired rockets as part of training that took place throughout the day in Gaza. Some of the rockets fell in Egyptian territorial waters, the officials said.

Over the weekend, Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian and wounded four others after the army said Palestinians fired a mortar that hit southern Israel, threw stones, and attempted to breach the border.

In a separate incident, a Gazan was wounded by Israeli gunfire after approaching the security fence along the frontier.

Prior to Friday, the last deadly incident in Gaza was on Nov. 1, when four Hamas militants were killed and five Israeli soldiers wounded during an army operation to destroy a tunnel from Gaza into Israel.

Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas, which rules the southern Palestinian enclave, are committed to an Egyptian-brokered truce that ended a major eight-day confrontation in November 2012.

Ma'an staff contributed to this report.

More Hamas stupidity - can't build the infrastructure to prevent Gaza flooding, can't keep Gaza's power plants running, but still eager to launch rockets across the border. DUMB!

@1 I can't count the attacks from "Israel" anymore, there are to many to count. What you are telling is that Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves? Only occupying "Israel" is having that right? Respect for the Palestinian patience!

@3, you know what, i wish Palestine would prove the world they can contruct something useful in their own land, instead of living in slums, take a year or 10 to improve healthcare and education, show the world you are worth something, and can live on your own, instead of funding your activities thru terro, palestine lives in a slum always have been, and always will.
