Minister: Internet prices to drop in 2014

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) – The Palestinian Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology plans to reduces Internet prices in 2014, the minister said Tuesday.
Suleiman al-Zuheiri told Ma’an he would seek to increase the numbers of Internet users and provide faster Internet speed at a lower price to keep up with technological developments in the world.
The ministry, added the minister, will urge Internet companies to focus on high speed and stop speeds which are less than 1 mega. Furthermore, the ministry will reduce taxes on Internet providers by 35 percent to enable these companies to increase speed and reduce consumer prices.
Al-Zuheiri highlighted that there are 11 national companies which provide Internet in Palestine. Internet prices went down by 50 percent in 2013, according to the minister.
The ministry will do its best to provide Internet to Palestinian villages in Area C of the occupied West Bank and in neighborhoods and villages of the Jordan Valley.
More importantly, the ministry will try to launch e-government services to enable citizens to electronically access services offered by different government ministries.
