QALQILIYA (Ma'an) -- An 85-year-old man died overnight Wednesday after inhaling excessive amounts of tear gas fired by Israeli forces in the Qalqiliya village of Kafr Qaddum, locals said, representing the first Palestinian death of 2014.

The incident occurred after Israeli forces dispersed a rally in the town commemorating the 49th anniversary of the founding of the Fatah movement.

The rally marched towards the entrance of the town before Israeli troops showered the area with tear gas. A canister landed in the home of Said Jasir, causing him to suffocate.

He was taken to the Al-Arabi hospital in Nablus where he was pronounced dead overnight.

There are weekly protests in Kafr Qaddum to protest the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements.

Hi Ma'an, I appreciate your constant reports. I can only ask that when reporting on deaths, it would greatly humanize the victims if you'd tell us a bit more about them. I'm sure this man had a loving family, was a father and grandfather to many. Thank you.
