GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Fatah has decided to cancel a major celebration of its 49th anniversary in Gaza City, a leader of the faction said Thursday.

"We were content with the crowded festival Tuesday during which a torch was lit at the Unknown Soldier's Statue in Gaza City," Faysal Abu Shahla told Ma'an.

Shahla said representatives of Palestinian nationalistic and Islamist movements joined in the festival during which Fatah leader Zakariyya al-Agha delivered a speech.

"The festival was comprehensive and it conveyed Fatah's message, and so we decided it was enough. We will continue to celebrate the freed prisoners (released from Israeli jails Tuesday) as we visit them in their districts."

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, had agreed on Monday to allow its rival Fatah to celebrate its 49th anniversary in the Gaza Strip.

The division between the two factions began in 2006, when Hamas won the Palestinian legislative elections.

In the following year, clashes erupted between Fatah and Hamas, leaving Hamas in control of the Strip and Fatah in control of parts of the occupied West Bank.

"...clashes...between Fatah...Hamas..."? O you mean, when Israel,USG,Wahhabi oil states,EU & Jordan launched their PA/Fatah-proxy 'good ole boy' colonial COUP(planned since 2003 by MI6)after Palestine's free&fair DEMOCRATIC legislative elections gave the vote to Hamas & NOT Israel's proxy PA? Right, those "clashes". Does the "unknown soldier" have a faction? Or is he just PROUDLY Palestinian? There's no anniversary to celebrate while Palestine(all factions)remains a prisoner of Israel,ILLEGALLY.

I've never understood why Palestinian groups celebrate their failures.
