RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas told a delegation on Saturday that without East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state, there will be "no peace between us and Israel."

Speaking to a popular delegation from Jerusalem Saturday in his office in Ramallah, Abbas highlighted that the Arab Follow-up Committee would reiterate this stance during a meeting with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday.

"He will be told that occupied East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine, and without this there will be no peace between us and Israel."

The current round of negotiations has been limited to nine months after which "we are free to do whatever we want," he said, highlighting that, "the time frame is limited and not open, and our unanimous position isn't secret."

He added that he heard that they (the Israelis) had refused to mention Jerusalem in any talks or negotiations.

"Let them say whatever they say. Unless it is mentioned clearly and marked in big fonts that it is the capital of the state of Palestine, there will be no peace with them and I want them to hear this."

"Our language is understandable. We have been hearing lots of talks about the capital here and there. The (Palestinian) capital is Jerusalem and its surroundings in Jerusalem which were occupied in 1967."

Jerusalem doesn't mean Abu Dis, but Abu Dis is part of Jerusalem, he added, referring to a neighborhood of Jerusalem cut off by the separation wall from the rest of the city.

Abbas highlighted that he is adhering to a stance that has long been official policy.

"We have a right even though we are weak in the world. We will continue to demand our rights and we will realize them."

Abbas added that the whole world had started to "know and understand our grievances and pains" and that European countries have started to support the Palestinian cause by boycotting products from Israeli settlements. Countries in North America, Latin America and Africa are doing the same, he added.

The Palestinian president denied Israeli claims that an agreement had been reached between the two sides to allow Israel to build more settlements when a group of Palestinian prisoners is released from Israeli jails.

"The Israelis link between prisoners and settlements. When a group is released, they build settlement units and claim this has been agreed on."

"These are lies as there is definitely no relation between releasing prisoners and settlements. Settlements are illegal from the beginning to the end."

Peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians were relaunched in July under the auspices of the United States after nearly three years of impasse.

Israel's government has announced the construction of thousands of housing units in illegal settlements since peace talks began.

The Palestinian negotiating team resigned in protest against continued Israeli settlement construction in mid-November, dealing a major blow to negotiations between Israel and the PLO that had already been stalled.

Negotiator Mohammed Shtayyeh told AFP at the time that they resigned in response to "increasing settlement building (by Israel) and the absence of any hope of achieving results," following Netanyahu's announcement that Israel would build 20,000 new settlement homes in the West Bank.

The internationally recognized Palestinian territories of which the West Bank and East Jerusalem form a part have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

Then he and the Palestinians should prepare to be disappointed. He may get a Palestinian enclave within East Jerusalem in a peace settlement, but Israel will never yield the whole of East Jerusalem. Perhaps the next generation of Palestinian leaders will be wiser - apparently we will have the opportunity to find out.

Obviously to put it very mildly it does NOT seem like a peace treaty will be signed. Abbas does agree to a Jewish State of Israel, which Israeli Jews read as okay you do not agree to our state to be permanent. You are just trying to make staged capture of all of Israel. This is what we read Fatah big shots say all the time in Arabic. Israel is not relenting on Jerusalem and neither is Abbas but Israel has annexed it years ago. Where does that leave us. Israel has Jewish democratic State and ...?

3 ) War / Peace
11/01/2014 23:29
That's fine: no peace means war. And war against Arabs do not scare Israelis too much - so far Israel won every war started by Arabs against Israel: in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973. Israel also defined palestinians during last terror war palestinians started in 2000 and called it second Intifada. There are no doubts that Israel will defeat palestinians again if they are stupid enough to start another war instead of peaceful resolution of the conflict. Palestinians and Arabs are not good in fight.

4 ) Jerusalem Is Not / On The Table
11/01/2014 23:40
"Without peace with Israel, there will be no" real Palestine created, and since E. Jerusalem Is Not, And Will Never Be, On The Table, THE PLO HAS A CLEAR & HARD CHOICE TO MAKE: -1- SURRENDER EAST JERUSALEM (& 1967 borders), or -2- NO PALESTINE WILL BE CREATED - EVER, and ** THE PLO HAS CHOSEN THE NO PALESTINE OPTION, so -3- Kerry should stop coming to speak with PLO leaders, and the USA (EU, etc.) should stop funding the Palestinian Authority !!!

Hopefully "this generation of US & world leaders will become wiser", and stop funding the "PA experiment", that will never lead to peace, which could mean that there will be No "next generation of Palestinian leaders" (other than terrorists), with whom world leaders will speak !!

- Israel may want peace, but does Not Need It to survive or prosper, but - the PLO needs at least a hope peace with Israel for both, and since Abbas just killed the last remaining hope, the international donations will stop coming, and the PLO/PA will cease to exist, in any meaningful way !!

Israel's Capitol is Jerusalem.....forever...Arabs have no claim nor rights to anyplace in greater Israel....they can be residents or guests,tourists.whatever...but...it's all Israel..sea to river....

Kerry should make clear that absent some compromise on both sides, both sides will deserve blame for failure of the talks. That includes Palestinians and Israelis who have occupied and expanded the city limits of East Jerusalem for decades.

Maybe the next generation of Israelis will be wiser.

12 ) Choices / Fantasies
12/01/2014 02:48
There are Only Two Ways this will be settled: -1- "Without East Jerusalem there will be NO PEACE" for Israel, or -2- With East Jerusalem there will be NO STATEHOOD for Palestine. Israel can accept either - the No Peace, or - the No Statehood option, while Palestine can accept neither, and Palestine's choice seems likely to be more decades of waiting, and more fantasizing the UN can give everything that it demands !!

There cannot be peace with Israel; Israel could never survive peace. However, it's good that Abbas recognizes that simply continuing to attempt to appease Israel is futile.

To Outlier #1: ' He may get a Palestinian enclave within East Jerusalem in a peace settlement...' Israel will not allow peace. There can never be a peace of any kind -- not as long as there is an Israel. There will be peace -- once there is no Israel.

"Without East Jerusalem there will be no peace", and "Without 1967 Borders there will be no peace", and "Without Refugee Return there will be no peace", so * CLEARLY THERE WILL BE NO PEACE. However, Abbas should take note that Israel has prospered for 65 years, with "no peace", and another 65 will be no different, while Palestine begs for everything, while it's potential gradually shrinks.

There will be no peace until Israel bows to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement and becomes a non-racist secular state. Facts on the ground have far outpaced any likelihood of a 2-state solution.

Jerusalem will never be allowed to be divided again, as it was under Jordanian rule from 1948 until 1967.

Fine with us! There really will not be a "piece" of deeply Jewish Holy Jerusalem going to the Palestinians, forget about it!"

Hey Paul #16...the racist BDS movement will fail, because it is inherently biased and illegal. Facts on the ground show that the BDS movement is not gaining, while Israel remains a strong liberal democracy with equal rights for its citizens. The BDS movement supports the openly racist and apartheid state of Palestine, whose leaders are on the record saying Jews are banned from Palestine and have no rights. BDS = racism at its ugliest.

20 ) Is not JERUSALEM / a WORD

in HEBREW????? Mentioned 100's of times in the BIBLE???? how can it be "palestinian?" (Never mentioned ONCE in the KORAN)

Israel is Neither a Perfect state, Nor a "Racist state" either, and Israel will Not "bow to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, or become a secular state" either, so Abbas, you, and I are correct: - "There will be no peace", and - "There will be no 2-state solution" either, unless Palestinians "bow" to Israel's terms for peace/statehood, and thus THE SITUATION WILL REMAIN unchanged, with: - ONE STATE (Israel), - ONE AUTHORITY (PA), AND - ONE MILITARY JUNTA (Gaza).

23 ) Outlier / USA
12/01/2014 18:55
14., Colin, don't be ridiculous. Israel will make peace when it and the Palestinians find common - if distasteful - ground. Neither will like final agreement, but both will decide peace is better than the current situation. Peace is made with enemies, so it is never easy. In this case, it may even take another war, this one between Israel and the Palestinians. But it will be made.

24 ) Reality / Both Peoples
12/01/2014 19:43
Paul (#16), Three Things Are Essentially Certain: -1- Israel will NOT "bow to the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions". -2- Palestine will NOT bow to the "Occupation", and -3- As "any likelihood of a 2-state solution" fades from Reality, Israel will remain a prosperous UN-member state, while the Other remains an impoverished, UN non-member state, with limited sovereignty divided between a Ramallah "Authority", and a Gaza regime that sponsors Terrorisms !!!

25 ) @ Colin (#21), / Reality & More Reality
12/01/2014 19:53
Despite your fantasy of "the BDS movement is gaining" anything, The Reality is that "Facts on the ground show that": -a- The disputed (Area C & E. Jerusalem) Lands are becoming increasingly Jewish in character, and because of this -b- These disputed Lands will Not become part of any proposed Palestinian state, if it ever should actually become a Reality !!

26 ) Two States / 1948 & 2012
12/01/2014 20:34
-1- As of the UN General Assembly's 2012 resolution, There have been "two states living side-by-side", and Just -2- As the UN Security Council's resolution failed to set borders of the two states in 1948, the UN 2012 border language is equally meaningless, and -3- As the 2012 state continues to use terrorist (stones & bombs from Ramallah) and military (mortars & rockets from Gaza) measures, the 1948 state is justified in using anti-terrorism and anti-military measures !!!

27 ) @ Levy-11 / USA
12/01/2014 20:39
Maybe "the next generation of Palestinians will be wiser" too, since Israel will remain a secure prosperous state, either way, but: - Without An Agreement With Israel, the world will be - Without A Real State For Palestinians !!

28 ) Dignity not Bowing / Palestine
12/01/2014 20:59
Well said President Abbas, Palestine says yes to dignity & no to bowing. We have endured & suffered for so long, yet we are still standing. East Jerusalem belongs to Palestine & must be our capital. We have rights, just like other countries & we are entitled to utilise our rights. The international community is waking up, social media ensures that people know what is happening & BDS is thriving. We are no longer weak & oppressed, we are gaining strength & momentum. United we can do great things.

29 ) Rachamim Dwek / Israel
13/01/2014 01:26
Abbas is talking nonsense. In 2008 he agreed that Israel would retain all the Jewish- majority areas with the exception of Har Choma, which Abbas wanted to trade for the area Arabs refer to as "Silwan." The Palestinian capital would be in Abu Dis which isn't within the Greenline. Ergo, what Abbas and other talking heads say to Arab audiences and what they say at the negotiating table are very rarely one and the same. The issue can be sourced via "Napkin Map" in the "Palestinian Papers."

30 ) Outlier / USA
14/01/2014 05:37
28., Dignity goes just so far. Yes united Palestinians can do great things, but without negotiations with Israel in which they yield some long held dreams to get other long held dreams, they will never have a Palestinian state.
