BRUSSELS (AFP) -- The European Union's foreign policy supremo said Saturday she was "deeply concerned" by what she said were "illegal" Israeli plans for more than 1,800 new settler homes.

"I was deeply concerned to hear the latest announcement by the Israeli authorities to advance settlement plans once more," Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

She added the settlements were "illegal under international law, constitute an obstacle to peace and threaten to make the two-state solution impossible."

She reiterated her call on Israel to cease its settlement building and said current efforts at peace talks were a "unique opportunity" for both sides.

On Friday, Tel Aviv unveiled proposals for 1,076 units in annexed east Jerusalem and 801 in the occupied West Bank in a move the Palestinians said was aimed at forcing the United States to abandon its push towards Middle East peace.

The internationally recognized Palestinian territories of which the West Bank and East Jerusalem form a part have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

Nobody is losing sleep over what Ashton thinks. Her dysfunctional EU continues to crumble economically, while demographically it is being taken over by radical Muslims who will in 100 years break every international law, dismantle the EU and set up an Islamic union. In 100 years, of course, there may still be no Palestinian state - and also no Lebanon, Jordan or Syria...all swallowed up by Islamofascist jihadists who slaugter everyone in their path.

As usual empty words from EU's representative. Always the same words " deeply concerned" that's all. Do something about it Mrs Ashton!!! We all knew that this statement was coming from barbaric Israeli's and as per your own statment you were going to blame Israel for the breakdown of negotiations if settlements were announced. MRS. ASHTON SO LET'S HAVE THAT STATEMENT NOW FROM EU BLAMEING ISRAEL FOR DESTROYING THE PEACE PROCESS.

Ohh please ashton what a non sense. Israeli sneezes that's also against international law. How about saying don't release 104 terrorists from prison because they murdered innocent people. I guess that's ok with europe as long as ur poor babies palestinians are happy.

Ashton is ridulous. Illegality is decided in a court of law, not the media. Israel's never been charged, let alone convicted of breaking any statute within International Law. The closest thing is the ICJ 2004 Advisory Opinion- a non binding piece of fluff. As for "Settlements being an obstacle to peace," how can that be when Oslo II stipulated that Israel's presence in Area C-and "Settlements" are strictly Final Status. The only obstacle to peace is Palestinian Terrorism.

@ 5) 100% agree! And Ashton is so busy with being deeply concerned about Israel building flats that she has no tome to be deeply concerned about the hideous bloodshed in the Muslim World and about the Iranian centrifuges going on spinning and spinning and spinning.....

#1Brain - As usual your comments make it sound as though it is Isreal you are talking about, land theft, Zionist State based on religious extremism, slaughter of innocents (Sabra & Shatilla, Gaza to name but a couple of instances) & #3 - jenya - the recently released prisoners were resistance fighters, like it or not Isreal started this war, so don't be surprised when some fight back. 5# - Rachamin - Isreal has never been charged because US makes it near impossible for Palestine to go to the ICC

2- FYI, "Mrs Ashton Can Do Nothing about it", and neither can the UN. Hopefully the next generation of Palestinian leaders will be wiser, since Israel will remain a secure prosperous Jewish state, either way, but: - Without An Agreement With Israel, the world will be - Without A Real State For Palestinians !! 4- The EU sends no money to Israel, but the flow of "tax money to the banana republic called Palestine" should come to a halt, since neither statehood, nor peace, will result !!
