BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man on pilgrimage was killed in a car accident in Saudi Arabia on Monday, a relative said.

Wisam Khamaysa from the town of Taffuh near Hebron told Ma'an that his cousin, 42-year-old Mahmoud Ismail Khamaysa, was run over by a private car while performing Umrah pilgrimage in Mecca.

He explained that after a man parked his car and stepped out, the car started to move.

Passersby tried to stop the car by hand before the driver ran to the driver's seat to try and stop the car, but instead of hitting the breaks, he hit the gas pedal, running over a number of pedestrians.

A woman and her daughter were also killed in the accident.
