BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Bethlehem and Ramallah on Monday as part of a four-day visit to the Holy Land.

Harper met with President Abbas in Ramallah, where he was received in an official ceremony.

Abbas and Harper inspected the honor guard as delegations from both sides met. A Canadian business delegation accompanied Harper and will meet with their Palestinian counterparts to discuss join ventures and investments, official news agency Wafa reported.

It is expected that Harper will pledge over $60 million to support the Palestinian private sector.

Earlier, Harper's visit to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem was mired in controversy as local journalists claimed that the premier's bodyguards assaulted them as they tried to cover his visit.

Cameraman Mousa al-Shaer told Ma'an that it was agreed that Harper and his entourage would enter the church first, with journalists following afterwards.

However, the Canadian premier's bodyguards prevented local journalists from entering the church and assaulted them in the process, al-Shaer said.

The Palestinian Union of Journalists said that one journalist was punched in the face and Amir Hijazi, who works for a local TV station, was hit with a metal object.

The union urged all Palestinian journalists to boycott Harper's visit to Palestine and called on the Canadian premier to issue an official apology.

I am proud of my Prime Minister for standing up against political correctness and for true correctness. He is one world leader who is unafraid to tell the truth. And I wonder what the truth is about these scuffles between journalists and bodyguards? You cannot expect to hassle a major world leader without his security detail making sure of his security.

I may not agree with everything my Prime Minister does but his eyes wide open stand on Israel makes him one of the only world leaders who has the testicles to say it like it is. God forbid we get some leftie apologist in power and this all goes to crap when we next have an election in Canada. I am SO sick of the media bias towards Israel and I too wonder what the REAL truth is about the scuffles between "journalists" and bodyguards.

Harper goverement one of only 9 countries who voted against Palestinian bid for non member observer state.we know where they stand when it comes to Palestine.all they received from harper government were words like we will punish the Palestinian Authority.just shameful.

Probably upset that it was only local journalists that were following the story & no one from CBC, Fox or CNN were there. Still nothing like a scuffle in one of the most famous churches in the world to liven things up a bit.

Def. upload it to You Tube and make sure the world is aware that this sorry excuse for a prime minister is nothing more than a paid Zionist accomplice--his Zionist moneybags are the largest contributors to his campaign funds. They "own" his friendship. We in Canada are ashamed of him. As a Canadian, I am so, so sorry for the thuggery against Palestinian journalists. If it's any consolation, he treats Canadian journalists with the same disdain. Fascists like to stick together. Boycott on!

"local journalists claimed that the premier's bodyguards assaulted them as they tried to cover his visit." "However, the Canadian premier's bodyguards" Prime Minister, not Premier. A Canadian Premier is the head of a province, like Ontario. A Prime Minister is the leader of a country (fraudulently elected in the case of Steven Harper). An excellent article otherwise. I just wanted to call attention to that small error.

Hurrah for PM Harper, who has the guts to say it like it is. He's one of the few world leaders who sees through the BS that the Palestinians have foisted on the 'progressive' west and is willing to put his political future on the line by supporting Israel, the only true democracy in the middle east.

#10 Michelle, "... he is the one who loves everybody according to the bible..." That's right. Love everybody doesn't mean you have to like them and what they stand for.

We were hoping that the PA and its representatives inside and outside Palestine will serve the Palestinian peoples interests and show him the door: "Said Hamad & Arab Ambassadors: Whose Interests Are You Serving?" http://www.cpavancouver.org/index.php/2014/01/17/said-hamad-arab-ambassadors-who-are-you-serving/

I can see why Palestinian's would be upset with this visit. when harper met with Abbas being asked questions on illegal settlements harper refrained from answering in fear of upsetting Israeli PM.hard to have respect for that kind of disregard for illegal settlement building and the illegal occupation of the the Palestinian people.

I am from vancouver, canada and i wanted to say that Stephen Harper is no friend of the Palestinian people. He has proved that many times recently. Most Palestinians already know that.
The Native People here in canada have the same problem with Stephen Harper that the Palestinian People have with the apartheid israeli gov.The Native People in canada are living under a canadian apartheid system.A representive from the United Nations visited the Native people here and condemned the canadian gov.
