RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinians on Wednesday gathered for the funeral of Muhammad Mubarak, a 22-year-old man who was shot dead by Israeli forces earlier in the day.

A Ma'an reporter said a funeral procession brought Mubarak's body from Ramallah Governmental Hospital to a cemetery in al-Jalazun refugee camp, where the man was laid to rest.

A group of masked men fired shots into the air during the procession.

Mubarak's father said he was shot dead without reason, denying army claims that he was armed and fired at Israeli forces.

He said his son worked daily in the area where he was shot dead, near the village of Ein Siniya.

Eyewitnesses in the area told Ma'an that Mubarak was a laborer working with the al-Tarifi company on a USAID funded project to refurbish the main road in Ein Siniya.

An Israeli army statement said: "A Palestinian terrorist opened fire at an IDF (army) post near Ofra. The soldiers responded immediately in order to eliminate the imminent threat to their lives and fired towards the terrorist, identifying a hit."

Palestinian housing and public works minister Maher Ghneim condemned what he described as the "cold-blooded killing" of a laborer who was working on a project run by the ministry in coordination with USAID.

Ghneim also lashed out at Israel's attempts to "distort the story" by saying Mubarak had opened fire on troops, claiming the youth had been "carrying a sign to direct the traffic" when he was shot.

He called for an independent inquiry into the shooting by international rights groups.

Last year, Israel's army killed 27 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, according to UN statistics.

Cold blood murder? Get real. This is what the Palestinian terrorist intended for the Israelis. The Israelis have the smoking gun and the bullet casings to prove it. What do the Palestinians have to support their fairy tales?

All the other articles I read said that this Palestinian was shooting at an army base, which makes more sense than this one that claims he was shot for nothing. The so called 'eyewitnesses' are nothing but a bunch of liars

Terrible beyond words - will the murderer be brought to justice ? Will there be formal and heartfelt apologies to the family ? Too many, too young, are being killed. They cannot be forgotten.

Cold blooded murder by a colonial oppressor. The stink of moral corruption in the Israeli army of occupation is spreading far and wide. This war crime will not be forgotten.

To Carson #2: 'All the other articles I read said that this Palestinian was shooting at an army base, which makes more sense than this one that claims he was shot for nothing.' Why do you say he was shot for nothing? He was shot for being Palestinian.

To Rondo Mondo #1: ' This is what the Palestinian terrorist intended for the Israelis. The Israelis have the smoking gun and the bullet casings to prove it.' Really? I'm surprised they bothered. What's your source?

To Colin, Jpost.com pictured the weapon. Haaretz identified the weapon as a Carl Gustav submachne gun, which the picture shows it is. If you blow up the picture shown on maan you will see the shape of a sub machine gun next to the dead terrorist. Another note, the dead terrorist was a nephew of Hamas leader Ahmad Mubarak. Hamas has tweeted a picture of the dead man with a submachine gun.

Number 8, you (we) all so far away are intended to see the picture and believe the IDF. After an alarming headline story including the (dis?) information you quote, all mention of this incident has disappeared from the Haaretz newspaper site. You tend to believe the IDF. The IDF took a YEAR to admit they had attacked the car of a Swiss diplomat some years ago and apologize. I tend to believe eyewitnesses.

There are some anti-Palestinian/ Islamophobic , prejudiced comments on this site. I have seen them in a few places. They are the same people. I see it as designed to provoke. Best to keep this in mind. Reason is not part of the plan.

To Rondo Mondo #8: 'If you blow up the picture shown on maan you will see the shape of a sub machine gun next to the dead terrorist. ' So we have (a) a Palestinian roadworker just started inexplicably shooting at a watchtower and all the witnesses lied, or (b) the Israelis killed the guy, put a gun next to the corpse, and took a photo. Oh, that's a poser...who to believe? Happily, since Zionists lie with almost surreal consistency, one can make a judgement call here.
