BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Abbas has proposed that US-led NATO forces be stationed indefinitely in a future Palestinian state, according to an interview with the New York Times on Sunday.

Speaking about security arrangements from Ramallah, Abbas said a NATO force could be positioned at all borders, checkpoints and within Jerusalem for a "long time" after Israeli military forces eventually withdraw from the occupied territories.

"The third party can stay. They can stay to reassure the Israelis, and to protect us," Abbas told the NYT.

The president said that Israeli military forces could remain in the West Bank for up to five years and the removal of illegal settlers should be phased out according to a similar timetable.

Abbas insisted that the future Palestinian state would be demilitarized with only a police force.

The president said recognizing Israel as a Jewish state was "out of the question" and insisted that the PLO will temporarily refrain from joining any UN agencies.

"If I don't get my rights, now put your foot in my shoe — what should I do?" he added, referring to possible future action.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians were relaunched in July under the auspices of the US after nearly a three year impasse.

Israel's government has announced the construction of thousands of housing units in illegal settlements since peace talks began.

Israeli officials have insisted that the PLO recognize Israel as a "Jewish state" and have also refused to remove military forces and settlers from the Jordan Valley, which forms a third of the occupied West Bank.

Israel has occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip since 1967 and moved hundreds of thousands of settlers into the occupied territories in contravention of international law.

If the Israelis REALLY want peace, they'll agree to allowing NATO or UN Peace keeping forces to man the borders and checkpoints. After all, in 65 years we've seen the #s of casualties of so-called "Israeli border police." They can't be trusted at all. Especially with an indoctrinated and venomous hatred of all Arabs.

Illegal annexations, settlement growth, and ethnic cleansing have precluded any negotiated two state solution. Justice demands UN and NATO impose resolution just as involuntary, disruptive and humiliating to Israel as it has wreaked upon occupied Palestine. Israel must be forced to accept an armed Palestine with externally enforced autonomy, eviction of all settlers, true contiguity encompassing Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem together, neither pinched nor parceled and pay punitive reparations

To Rami, Israel knows from the performance of UN troops in Lebanon not to outsource their security to third parties. Palestinian causalities are directly related to attempts to harm Israelis in the past and present. Stop Palestinian terrorism and incitement to hate and violence against Israelis and you will see few Palestinian causalities caused by the Israelis. Neither side has to profess love for the other. Palestinians need to give up their addiction to violence.

That's a cute thought - JohnWV forced to accept a combined first nations army of Sioux, Cherokee, Huron, Mohawk, and the rest. They would disarm all the white invading police forces and take over the U.S. Army, then evict JohnWV and the rest of his disgusting settler colonists who will pay punitive reparations before JohnWV is repatriated to wherever he came from. I like the thought. Good plan John. Pack your bags. You're part of the war criminal organization that will be evicted.

Israel objects to withdrawing its troops or evacuating its settlements there, on the grounds that without its own military manpower on the ground, even the most sophisticated instruments of surveillance would not be proof against terrorist incursions to the West Bank and Israel itself. This danger is more acute since the jihadst Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) seized territory in Iraq, especially in consideration of the offshoots these jihadists maintain in Jordan

How about putting the Nato force in Israel? After all, it's she that needs to be restrained.

Nato. UN. And pretty much every so called peace keeping force are useless. Abbas is in no postion to demand or suggest anything. His own hamas palestinians don't regognize him. Palestinians only want to kill jews and that why they exist. Israel will never agree to this useless idea and palestinians will never have a state and that's what they deserve

JohnnyWV. You forgot the right of return of all the Palestinians living in the other Arab countries. Once you are going for the jugular you might as well go whole hog. Being from WV you do relate to hogs don't you ? Family members no doubt.

The facts on the ground always prevail. What Abbas should do is to transfer a million Pal refugees in from Jordan and Syria into West Bank. They will be in poverty, but they will establish facts on the ground. Otherwise it is game, set, and match for Israel.

Considering the uselessness of NATO troops in southern Lebanon, Israel might accept this, knowing they will be no deterrent at all!

Why not a national force? You see how south Lebanon isn't safe even with UN troops and didn't prevent the 2006 war

To Rondo Mondo #5: 'Stop Palestinian terrorism and incitement to hate and violence against Israelis and you will see few Palestinian causalities caused by the Israelis. ' Considering how what you are pleased to call 'terrorism' and 'incitement' has fallen off dramatically, and the only result has been to excite the Zionists to still greater excesses of aggression and violence, it takes quite a bit of chutzpah to make the claim you just did. 5 points.
