CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Three Egyptian police officers were shot dead by suspected militants in northeastern Egypt early Wednesday, security sources said.

Egyptian security sources told Ma'an that three Egyptian policemen were shot and killed on a desert road between the Ismailia and Suez governorates.

The three officers were identified as Ahmad Hussein Fahmi, Muhammad Abd al-Qadir, and Eid Khairi Abd al-Hafidh.

After the attackers fled, the policemen were taken to a public hospital in Ismailia, where they were pronounced dead, the sources said.

Violence has escalated in northeastern Egypt, especially in the Sinai Peninsula, in the wake of the country's ongoing instability following the military overthrow of elected president Mohamed Morsi.
