NABLUS (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority has decided to remove the section detailing religious affiliation on Palestinian identity cards, according to officials.

The undersecretary of the ministry of interior Hassan Alawi told Ma'an that President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree to remove religious affiliation from identity cards beginning on Feb. 11, 2014.

Alawi said the decision was made entirely by Palestinian authorities and ensures the equality of all Palestinians, regardless of their religion.

Although the majority of Palestinians are Muslims, just under 10 percent of Palestinians in the West Bank are Christian, in addition to thousands more in the Gaza Strip.

A few hundred Palestinians in the West Bank are Samaritans, a religion closely associated to Judaism.

A good move. But in practice , one can , in most cases realize the religion ( at least born in religion) of a person from their name ( first name or last name) .Israel hides its ways of distinguishing one as a non Jew by issuing distinctive national ID numbers.

Religious status of a passport/ID owner is PRIVATE! It's a documentation of residency/nationality,only! This is just another trick to SEPARATE Gaza from W/B with PA appearing more"secular"&"democratic"than the other(Hamas),despite the fact that PA bows to Israel's Absolutist occupation &declaration of theocratic "Jewish"statehood,LOL! Just as factions consider NATIONAL UNITY,PA changes ID's? Nazi Israel is pushing PA to DIVIDE Palestinians more!Is Abbas going to SEW a yellow star on his suit 2?

The Israeli occupation has long categorized and sub-categorized Palestinians, and even their own Jewish population! Since 1948 up until now, the Israeli occupation's strategy was to divide the inhabitants into two main categories, the People whom are the true indisputable Jews, and those are upper humans, and the Unpeople whom are any other non-Jew inhabitant. Unpeople are also sub-categorized, with numbers, colors, letters, religion, and nationality in ID, car plates and certificates.

Regardless to the Israeli and Hamas rhetoric, and unlike the Israel propaganda, we don't have an identity crisis, we don't need an apartheid categorization to try to create a certain identity and distinguished it from others. This land will remain doomed to conflicts as long as fanatic religious mentalities are empowered to rule. We want a free democratic Palestine for all Palestinians, and all under the role of law not religions.

#3&4:Moh'd A.:"...a free democratic Palestine for all Palestinians...all under...role(rule)of law not religions."? Accepted! But,from Israel's point of view,it doesn't matter if Palestinians are secular or Islamic. You are ALL(except for slave labor)going to be thrown under the Israel-Zionist TANK just for NOT being Zionist-Jewish! Israel won't ALLOW "a free democratic Palestine"of Arabs(demographically growing). It's a threat to their Jewish-only expansion(10 Jewish-colonies in the Negev soon)!!!

CONT:to Moh'd #3&4: Hundreds of thousands of Bedouin who even serve in Israel's army, aren't even allowed to populate their ancestral villages in the Negev, because they are ARAB! Don't expect autocratic Israel to ALLOW an ARAB state Moh'd,whether under secular leaders or Islamic. That's not the POINT!Your ARAB IDENTITY &very presence,as a non-Jew,is the "threat"to Zionism regardless of who leads you.Zionism will allow proxy-Arabs(with no ID/rights)who BOW to Zionist CONTROL,ONLY!Wake up Moh'd!

#5&6:Mel. I agree. But this is as far as we are allowed to go to resist the occupation "up until now". we are the only people in the world's history denied our right to self-determination except through negotiations. & this unusual accepted situation by the west is derived from Israel's exceptionality supported by the US, regardless to the US & West long history of all forms of resistance to pursue their self-determination. But eventually we will resist regardless to Israel's exceptionality.
