CAIRO (Ma'an) -- An Egyptian police officer was shot dead on Monday in the northern Sinai Peninsula by unidentified gunmen, Egyptian security sources said.

The sources told Ma'an that the officer was on his way to the police station in el-Arish when gunmen shot him dead and fled the scene.

He was identified as 35-year-old Ramadan Ghuneimi Abd al-Samad.

The sources speculated that the gunmen were likely affiliated to Wahhabi militant groups.

Egyptian armed forces launched large scale military action against militants in Sinai in September, in what officials have described as the largest mobilization of force in the area since the 1973 war with Israel.
