HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces closed down the village of Beit Ummar north of Hebron and erected several flying checkpoints around it.

Spokesman for the local resistance committee Mohammad Ayyad Awad said dozens of Israeli soldiers and vehicles were deployed at the entrances of the village and were searching passersby.

Awad said that Israeli forces raided the house of Ahmad Younis Abu Ayyash and turned it into a military barracks.

Does it ever occur to anyone to think about how strange all this is going to look a hundred years from now? I mean, most of it's completely pointless. It's like the Israelis need to go through the motions of living out some rather unpleasant fantasy -- without any regard for the actual needs of their situation. For example, just what is this siege supposed to accomplish?

I suppose one element is the bloated military. All these Israeli Jews need to be conscripted into it. Having been conscripted, they can't just sit around the barracks doing nothing -- that would give the game away. So they have to be sent out to conduct all these pointless lockdowns and sweeps and patrols and whatever. It's all this weird exercise in creating a lousy time for all. It becomes an unDisneyland. Let's all be miserable!

I've often ascribed the IDF's chronic brutality to some inherent defect in the Israeli psyche. Maybe it owes as much to sheer boredom. Nothing can happen -- or rather, the only way you can make it happen is to seize on some victim and torment him in some way. The checkpoint abuses occur simply because there is nothing else to do. This would help to explain the apparent and otherwise inexplicable phenomenon that the more quiescent the Palestinians are, the more vicious the IDF gets.
