GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli soldiers shot and injured two Palestinians on Monday as they were collecting stones from fields in the northern Gaza Strip, a medical official said.

Gaza Ministry of Health spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra said two men were taken to Kamal Idwan hospital after being shot by Israeli troops near the Erez crossing.

Israeli soldiers stationed at monitoring posts by the crossing opened fire at the men as they collected stones in nearby fields.

Both men were moderately injured.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said that a few Palestinians entered a prohibited area and were acting "suspiciously and meddling with the ground."

"Soldiers fired warning shots and then fired at their lower extremities and one hit was confirmed," she added.

Many Gazans in the besieged coastal enclave collect small stones in order to make gravel for concrete due to a shortage caused by Israel's blockade.

Israeli forces frequently shoot at farmers and other civilians inside the Gaza Strip if they approach large swathes of land near the border that the Israeli military has deemed off-limits to Palestinians.

The "security buffer zone" extends between 500 meters and 1500 meters into the Strip, effectively turning local farms into no-go zones.

According to UNOCHA, 17 percent of Gaza's total land area and 35 percent of its agricultural land were within the buffer zone as of 2010, directly affecting the lives and livelihoods of more than 100,000 Gazans.

This is becoming too strange to be coincidence. All Gazans know that Hamas and PIJ regularly attack the border fence, especially sneaking in to lay IEDs and mines. With hundreds of square km to choose from, there are simply too many incidents of Gazans "searching for gravel" in an area they all know is a military zone. Why don't they dig into the ground under their feet to get at the massive amount of existing rock in Gaza? You begin to see that this story has a strange smell to it.

Palestinian citizens in Gaza ON THEIR OWN LAND are shot at by Israeli forces from across the border - and the innocent civilians are blamed? What planet are you on, 1) and 2)? If Canadian military shot across the border at Americans civilians going about their business in the US there would be a very prompt response from the US AND the international community - and it would not be to attribute blame to the US civilains....

"...Many Gazans in the besieged coastal enclave collect small stones in order to make gravel for concrete due to a shortage caused by Israel's blockade..." - Which obviously equates to 'meddling with the ground & warranting getting shot'. Only in Gaza could this be allowed to happen. My only question is why does the International Community support this?

This is only condoned due to the Americans support of Israel. Of which I am ashamed. As all Americans should be.

Gaza is full of rocks. There is no need to go into a "security buffer zone" to collect rocks. Be realistic if someone fired warning shoots at you, you would run away. The rock collectors did not run from gunfire. Stupid or brave that is up to your personal view of what happened.

To Bob in Canada: And Canada isn't the US off from food, water, medical supplies, peace of mind, safety, the ability to travel, the ability to get together without being shot! So your comparison makes no sense at all. Israel is doing all of those things to a weakened population.
