JERUSALEM (AFP) -- An Israeli soldier, who was suspended after being shown in a video clip cocking his gun and aiming at Palestinian teenagers, has received massive support online, media reported Wednesday.

Only hours after a Facebook page was created Tuesday in support of the elite Nahal infantry unit soldier identified only as David, it had clinched almost 60,000 likes.

Breaking the Silence, a pacifist group of former Israeli soldiers, denounced that kind of support and said the "situation depicted in the video is far from unusual."

A video posted on YouTube shows the young soldier raising his weapon after a verbal exchange with one of the teenagers, cocking it and aiming it at him.

He then threatens to put a "bullet in the head" of a third man filming the event unless he stops.

Breaking the Silence said "the Nahal soldier's reaction is hardly extreme when compared with the day-to-day conduct of the IDF (Israeli army) in the (Palestinian) occupied territories".

Far-right Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett posted a statement of support for the soldier on his Facebook page, writing: "He was alone, surrounded by several violent and aggressive Arabs. He didn't shoot and defended himself and his surroundings adequately."

Hebron is a major site of tensions as a result of the presence of 500 Jewish settlers and thousands of Israeli soldiers, meaning that local Palestinian residents have to pass through checkpoints in order to move between neighborhoods in the Old City.

Some areas, like Shuhada Street, are almost completely shut to Palestinians while open to Jews, and thousands of Palestinians have left as a result of harassment and limitations imposed by Israeli authorities.

Well of course they'd "back" him. They're equally guilty of his crimes by their uniform, indoctrination&hate association! It's easier(on surface)to deny what the soul truely feels i.e.guilt.But,it's harder to admit the reality of how Israel's brutal occupation is eating the soul out of apartheid Israel, where being called a "good soul" or"do gooder",or "Yafeh Nefesh"by Zionists is a huge insult! Compare 60,000"likes"with BILLIONS of "dislikes".I'm proud to be Yafeh Nefesh!

A mean young thug apparently acting out what he's seen in American movies, swaggering and posturing with his gun in the Martyrs Street in Hebron is supported, "liked", overwhelmingly by Israelis on Facebook (who have presumably watched the video). It's a picture of a sick society because the "support" is automatic and along racial lines. There's no discussion about his behaviour. He's a Jewish soldier, protecting Jews, patroling the frontier where Arabs are dangerous, violent, irrational and

(contd.) full of hate. It's straight out of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and the Deep South in the bad old days, where white aggressors and accusers were believed and supported unthinkingly (by whites) because blacks were a scary, less than human, alien other. Like Arabs in Hebron. You would think it a direction a modern society would NOT want to go, being a throwback to darker days full of paranoia and hate, but apparently Israeli leaders like Naftali Bennett have other plans.

So, basically, soldiers shouldn't defend themselves when someone jumps him from behind with brass knuckles and being surrounded by people clearly trying to goad him into something? This was a set up, rediculous.

I expect everyone interested in this, particularly all those who apparently support the Israeli soldier who threatened the young Palestinian boy with a loaded rifle, will want to know why all the supporters on YouTube and on Facebook choose to hide their faces from camera!!! Much like the IDF soldier ............. cowardly.........

6 ) Perhaps & Definite / The Difference

There is a difference between threats & murder, and is a difference between Palestinians & Israelis tolerance of each, and where - Perhaps "Thousands of Israelis back a soldier who threatened Hebron teens", and based on a joint Israel-Palestinian Survey Poll, - Definitely 100s of Thousands of Palestinians back the two Awad family Palestinians that stabbed to death a Jewish family (husband, wife, children, & 6 mo. infant) in the village of Itamar in 2011.
