BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The PLO will agree to resume peace talks on the condition that Israel frees pre-Oslo prisoners and freezes settlement construction, a senior official said Saturday.

Speaking to Ma'an on the sidelines of a conference organized by the Fatah movement, Chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said that it was still not clear when peace negotiations would be relaunched.

Addressing the conference in Yatta in the southern West Bank, Erekat said that regardless of Israel's "stubbornness" at the negotiation table, Palestinians are in a better position than before, now that Palestine "is behaving like a state at international gatherings" including the UN.

Erekat said that Palestine would become a signatory of the Hague Convention of 1907 on June 2.

Among other panelists at the conference were Jamal Zahalka, a Palestinian member of the Israeli Knesset, Sultan Abu al-Aynein, a Fatah Central Committee Member, and several other Fatah leaders and Hebron dignitaries.

Israel's failure to release as agreed a final round of Palestinian veteran prisoners was a key pitfall in the latest round of US-brokered peace talks.

In response, the PLO acceded to 15 international treaties and conventions, a move that enraged the Israeli side.

The chances of Israel going back to the negotiating table are pretty slim. Israel is more likely to take unilateral actions like the Palestinians have done. The difference is Israel has the ability to implement their actions on the ground while the Palestinians do not. Time is on Israel's side. Israel can wait 100 years for the Palestinians to make a reasonable offer to reach peace. Given the Palestinians' record, do not expect this to happen any time soon.

Erekat is such a subjugated,occupation-compliant,'Yes masser' proxy!Calling war crimes 'stubbornness'?
Oslo "peace-talks"=distraction.They always were & he knows that!'Peace-talks' is still code for PAUSE on peace,FAST-FORWARD Jewish-only colonies(under USG patronage)& ERASE Palestine! International law demands the end to the ENTIRE Israeli militarist occupation &colonial collective-punishment of occupied indigenous peoples for NOT being Jews. ENDING ISRAEL'S WAR CRIMES makes EVERYONE FREE!!

Mel, is it a war crime for a Jew to live peacefully in Israel? Is it a war crime to stop a suicide bomber? Is it a war crime to be a Jew? It would be helpful to all us readers to better understand your terminology. Thanks for posting and answering.

-1- Just look at the Flag behind the PLO, with guns, swords, and all of Israel as "Palestine", and it should be obvious that * THERE WILL BE NO TALKS, PEACE, OR PALESTINIAN STATE, and -2- The PLO is about to form a unity government with Hamas, so PLO "conditions" are soon to be irrelevant, and in unity, and Hamas (who won the last election) terms, of armed "resistance", terrorism, with brief truces, will likely have more weight, so -3- "Renewal of peace talks will be Impossible" !!!

-1- Israel is through bribing the PLO to restart talks or negotiations, so -2- the PLO can talk, negotiate, or compromise when (or if ever) it chooses, but prisoner & building preconditions to talks have been rejected, and they will never again be reconsidered, so -3- the Choice of talking, without preconditions, or Not talking at all, is entirely up to the PLO, and you should choose well for your people, since nothing will change until talks/negotiations are completed !!!
