BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) – The Palestinian Authority is asking the international community, and particularly the United States, to intervene with Israel to answer the demands of detainees on hunger strike against administrative detention.

Issa Qaraqe, minister of prisoners' affairs, told Ma’an on Monday that he sent letters to “concerned” parties but received no positive response.

He said they were responsible for the death of any prisoner on hunger strike, especially now that many of them have been moved to Israeli hospitals and are in dangerous conditions.

Qaraqe alleged that Israel's Shin Bet intelligence service told the strikers it wanted them to die.

Two-hundred prisoners began their 33rd day of hunger strike while Israel is refusing to negotiate.

Qaraqe expects that many more prisoners in Israeli jails, about 5,000 including Marwan Barghouhi, Ahmad Saadat and Abbas al-Sayyid, will join this mass strike during the next few days.
