GAZA CITY (Ma’an) – Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh assured Monday that the Islamist faction would collaborate with the new unity government to overcome all obstacles facing it.
In a speech following the announcement of the government, Haniyeh said that this was a step on the way to unity and that the government has many missions ending the Gaza siege.
“We hope that people in the West Bank appreciate the importance of the unity government, ”Haniyeh said.
He called for a PLO leader to meet as soon as possible.
“We will carry on with the reconciliation and what we accomplished is essential for beginning a new stage,” Haniyeh added.
He assured that reconciliation did not mean ending the division but rather is a step toward unity, a national strategy and building a leadership for Palestinians everywhere.
Earlier Monday, Hamas gave its blessings to the national unity government.
Sami Abu Zahri, a Hamas spokesman, said following the announcement of the unity government: “This is a step that is accomplished and we can say that forming the government is behind us.
He added: "Now the effort is to remove the effects of the division.”
