BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas will head to Cairo over the next few days to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Egyptian president Abdul Fatah al-Sisi, a Palestinian diplomat said Wednesday.

Palestinian ambassador to Jordan Atallah Khairi told Ma'an that Abbas will be part of at least 35 leaders to attend the ceremony.

He will also hold a meeting with al-Sisi, Khairi said.

Earlier, Hamas official Ahmed Yousef said that he hopes Abbas will discuss the issue of the Rafah crossing, which has been frequently closed since Egypt's military ousted democratically elected president Mohamed Morsi.

Sisi took 96.9 percent of the vote in an election held nearly a year after he toppled Morsi. Sisi's only rival, leftist Hamdeen Sabbahi, won less than four percent of the vote.
