RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday summoned the Australian Representative to Palestine Tom Wilson over recent remarks by Australian Attorney-General George Brandis saying that the country would stop referring to East Jerusalem as "occupied."

In a news conference at his office in Ramallah, Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki expressed deep concern about Brandis' remarks, highlighting that they "contradict with all international resolutions."

The international community, he added, views Palestine as a state whose capital is under occupation, and this is a fact that has been recognized by all relevant UN bodies.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem after its invasion of Jordan in 1967, and annexed the area in 1981. The move, however, never recognized by the international community as it is in contravention of international laws prohibiting the annexation of occupied territory, as well as the movement of the occupying population into those lands.

Al-Maliki urged the government of Australia to offer an official explanation for the remarks about East Jerusalem in the coming days.

Brandis announced on Thursday that the government of Australia would stop referring to East Jerusalem as "occupied" territory.

"The description of east Jerusalem as 'occupied' east Jerusalem is a term freighted with pejorative implications which is neither appropriate nor useful," Brandis said at the time, which also marked the 47th anniversary of the Israeli occupation of the city.

- The world leaders are done listening to your accusations of Israel*, and they will only listen to your words of peace to Israel, so - Unless you start talking to Israel**, you may as well be mute !! * Israel has favored economic status at the EU and USA, and Australia does NOT even consider Jerusalem "Occupied" anymore. ** Peace talks will only be possible during construction of Jewish homes on some lands that you claim should be Palestine's.

Reality on the ground - where it counts - puts East Jerusalem in Israel. Palestinians can - and will - make claims otherwise, but they never possessed East Jerusalem (Jordan did) and never will.
