HEBRON (Ma'an) -- A brawl erupted on Monday evening between participants in an event in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners in Hebron.
The dispute started after the head of the Palestinian prisoners’ society in Hebron, Amjad al-Najjar, mentioned names of prisoners who are not on a hunger strike.
When he mentioned the name of prisoners Abbas al-Sayed, Hamas leader Aziz Dweik responded by saying “you are a liar.”
Arguments started after that which escalated to fighting and chair-throwing.
A statement by the prisoners’ society condemned the “thoughtless and reckless” behavior and accused Hamas of assaulting al-Najjar.
The statement accused Dweik of starting the assault on al-Najjar, which allowed a group of “young Hamas fanatics” to start cursing and insulting al-Najjar and attempting to throw chairs at him.
“What Aziz Dweik did through his behavior and the behavior of those with him at the event insults prisoners and their heroic strike,” the statement said.
Dwiek denied the allegations that he assaulted al-Najjar, adding that “it was the families and mothers of prisoners that stopped al-Najjar’s claims.”
“Amjad al-Najjar does not deserve this position, and it seems that he is aiming for a higher position,” Dweik added.
