GALILEE (Ma'an) -- Israeli police said an 84-year-old man from Deir al-Asad in the Galilee region killed his 77-year-old wife early Wednesday.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement that the "body of a 77-year-old woman was found early today in a house in Deir al-Asad, with signs of violence on the top part of her body which increases suspicion that it was an act of murder."

"Karmiel police forces detained the husband of the deceased, 84, on suspicions of committing the murder and he was taken for investigations while a team of experts and detectives continued investigation." Samri added.

She added that "police will continue investigations with the suspect, the husband. There is a possibility that the murdered was hit with a heavy tool and the suspect is expected to be sent to a court in Acre to extend his detention for investigations."

The man, who was not identified by name, had reportedly called his son earlier on Wednesday saying "Come home, I attacked your mother." When the son came home he found his mother lying in a pool of blood with bruises on her body, at which point he called the police and the ambulance services.

They pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Samri pointed out that there had never been any calls to police regarding domestic violence from either party.
