RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A number of journalists were injured Wednesday after scuffles broke out between a Hamas-affiliated group and security forces during a protest against a wave of recent political detentions.

Hamas had called for a march in Ramallah to protest the detention of 16 Hamas activists by Palestinian Authority security forces on Sunday, which they considered to be politically-motivated.

A number of women holding signs against political detention attended the march, but after quarrels erupted between the protesters and security forces, a number of Hamas-affiliated men attempted to interfere and were subsequently detained.

When journalists and attempted to to take pictures, meanwhile, they were assaulted by security forces and some of the journalists' cameras were confiscated.

Among those injured in the violence was the head of the Journalists' Syndicate, and three journalists were briefly detained.

The Journalists' Syndicate condemned the assaults on the journalists, stressing that the violence was a violation of the freedom of the press and the rights of journalists, as well as the atmosphere of national reconciliation.

The syndicate called upon the PA security forces to protect journalists and to help them do their jobs, adding that they had reached out to "security sources" to ensure that there would not be any more assaults on journalists.
