BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) – A Palestinian ministerial committee tasked to examine how to join international conventions is scheduled to convene by the end of June in Ramallah to study submitting letters of accession to more multilateral international treaties.

Palestinian diplomats told Ma’an on Wednesday that the committee would meet June 25-27 to review more letters of accession. The committee is headed by Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki. Senior PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat and Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour are members of the committee.

According to the sources, the Palestinian leadership intends to join some 500 more international conventions and organizations.

“Every day new international treaties emerge, such as the Arms Trade Treaty, and all Palestine needs to join them is a letter of accession signed by President (Mahmoud) Abbas to the UN Secretary General,” a diplomat told Ma’an.

Palestine voted Tuesday, for the first time, as a member state in elections of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Special Needs, a sub-committee of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Special Needs.

The State of Palestine will also participate by the end of June in an international conference on women’s rights.

The leadership could sign treaties on air & sea, that way they might get the blockade on Gaza lifted. Then there's the Rome Statute. Please Mr President, sign as many treaties as possible, we are one people, united as Palestinians, but divided by the illegal occupation & siege. We want to be free.

Palestine should join the ICC and go after the Zionist war criminals until they are all brought to justice.

Having given Americans enough time and seeing US initiatives fail because of Americans' unwillingness to exert even the minimum of pressure on Israel, the only way to Palestine Statehood is through the United Nations, with the help of European countries, and wily-nilly, even US might provide some help. So, joining the international organizations is just the right move. Israel's intransigence is bringing international community closer to Palestinians which they should use beneficially.

I have lost hope in that useless puppet Abbas to turn to UN organizations and ICJ. Elections now!
