GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Gaza Strip's sole power plant is expected to shut down Tuesday after the last shipment of Qatar-donated fuel runs out, Gaza's power authority said.

Fathi Sheikh Khalil, the deputy chairperson of Gaza's power authority, said that the plant would run out of fuel Tuesday.

Gaza will then depend on 140 megawatts of electricity from Israel and 20 megawatts from Egypt, only a third of the electricity needed to power the Strip, Khalil said.

He said the Gaza power authority had contacted the newly-formed national consensus government seeking a solution to the power crisis, but that nothing had been done so far.

Qatar had in March agreed to continue to donate money to fuel Gaza's power plant for three months.

The Gulf state also donated $10 million to Gaza for fuel in the wake of the humanitarian crisis caused by severe weather in the region in December on top of difficulties caused by the Israeli blockade on the coastal enclave.

The Gaza Strip has been under a severe economic blockade imposed by Israel since 2006, leading to frequent humanitarian crises.

LIFT THE SIEGE - the reasons for it ie Shalit and a Hamas govt, no longer exist. The international community - especially the UN - are really showing what a useless bunch of idiots they are. And they wonder why another intifada is seen as the only possible solution??!!

@yaacov I say we need to boycott and sanction the terrorist state of Israel. The kidnapping of hundreds, assassination, torture, theft and and violence motivated by a twisted belief in the superiority of one religious/ethnic group at the expense of the indigenous population which has been living there for centuries, are seen by a vast majority of mankind for what they are, intolerable injustice. Your warped self-righteousness is vicious and disgusting.

Yaacov, with comments like that is it any wonder that Israel is despised around the world?

#1 Hamas and other militants have been firing rockets at Israel at a pace of one per day this year. Hamas kidnapped 3 Israeli children. Shin Bet has thwarted 283 terrorist attacks in the last 18 months. Hamas' signature is on 45% of those attempted terrorist attacks. It is time for Israel to do a second root canal of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza after it finishes doing the same in the West Bank. The biggest beneficiaries of this action will be ordinary Palestinians.

It is a tragic and uncanny situation all round in the region when children on both sides are slain and shot for ethnical and warlike reasons when peace and beauty of the holy region and marvellous climate should prevail, and all over hunger for Land and Water. Buildings can come and go, water pipes and electricity can rise and pass, but Land is eternal and the Fight for it seems to go on and on.
