JERUSALEM (Ma’an) – The Palestinian High Judicial Council on Saturday strongly denounced an attack against Supreme Judge of Palestine Sheikh Mahmoud al-Habbash and his escorts inside the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on Friday.

In a statement, the High Judicial Council described the assailants as “a tyrannical group who don't show any respect to the sacredness of religion, clerics or even holy places, especially the al-Aqsa Mosque.”

According to the statement, al-Habbash, who is also the former Palestinian minister of endowment, was “doing his religious duty toward the al-Aqsa Mosque, which is being assaulted by Israeli settlers protected by Israeli occupation security officers.”

While doing his duty, the statement added that al-Habbash was assaulted, and it highlighted that he had always urged Arabs and Muslims “to pack up and travel to the al-Aqsa Mosque.”

The statement warned that such a “cowardly” assault against a respectable Palestinian figure “won’t discourage us and change our attitude toward the al-Aqsa Mosque and other Islamic and Christian holy places.”

Media reports said Friday that some Palestinians in the mosque were angry when al-Habbash visited, citing controversial religious rulings. They shouted at the minister and forced him to leave the mosque.
