BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli fighter jets bombed three Hamas sites in the southern Gaza Strip late Friday after 14 projectiles were fired from the besieged enclave into southern Israel, military officials said.

There were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

In a statement, the Israeli military said the bombings were in response to "constant rocket fire" toward southern Israel from the Gaza Strip.

"Since midnight, 14 projectiles were fired at Israel. 10 rockets and mortars hit Israel, 3 were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and 1 landed in Palestinian territory," it said.

"Since the kidnapping of the three Israeli teenagers, approximately 150 projectiles were fired at Israel, out of which approximately 98 landed in Israel and 18 were intercepted by the Iron Dome," the statement said.

Earlier, a Palestinian was shot and critically injured by Israeli forces in the central Gaza Strip. Medical sources said he was shot in the chest and taken to a hospital.

The army said it opened fire at Palestinians who approached the fence and were suspected of attempting to plant an explosive device.

Hours before that, Israeli forces fired multiple mortar shells at southern Gaza, locals and Israel's army said.

Witnesses said that tanks fired at least three shells east of Rafah that targeted the abandoned Yasser Arafat airport.

No injuries were reported.

An Israeli army spokeswoman confirmed at the time that Israeli forces used mortar fire in the southern Gaza Strip in response to two mortar shells fired from Gaza.

The mortars landed in the Eshkol regional council with no injuries reported.

Maan, Israel would be proud of you. Great headline "Israel targets Gaza after rocket fire" Anyone reading would think the Palestinians started and the Israelis are responding. Makes a lot sense for Zionist propaganda in the US. However, reality is something else.

One Palestinian child has been killed by Israel every 3 days for the past 13 years 1,518 Palestinian children were killed by Israel's occupation forces from September 2000 up to April 2013. That's the equivalent of one Palestinian child killed by Israel every 3 days for almost 13 years. The number of children injured by the Israelis has now reached 6,000. 9,000 Palestinians under 18 years old have been arrested since the end of September 2000. Almost two hundred and fifty Palestinian minors

-1- Truthfully, Palestinians both Did "start" and always do start the violence, and "the Israelis just respond". -2- As long as PALESTINIAN MILITANTS ATTACK Israel, they will be attacked by Israel (in defensive strikes), AND because militants fight among children, Palestinian CHILDREN will SOMETIMES DIE, and -3- As long as PALESTINIAN REFUSE PEACE with Israel, both they AND their CHILDREN, will REMAIN WITHOUT A real STATE of their own.

These children you mention were killed in many ways...but never in cold blood....dead is dead you say..you are right...many were killed when Hamas fired rockets and guns using them as shields knowing full well they will die...many little ones are kept unburied for showing more victims..some were killed just by the accident of wars Hamas started...a good number were over 16 yrs old and active fighters ..and t he numbers were always pushed higher propaganda wise...it's still very sad indeed ..

@3 That's because their government does not protect their citizens. But spends money on weapons and not homes or fuel.

For 36 hours, Israel held back on military action against Palestinian Hamas strongholds in the Gaza Strip in the hope of a truce to halt the incessant Hamas rocket barrage against Israeli towns and villages. However, after 17 rockets and mortar shells were fired during the day - the last two aimed at the town Ofakim for the first time and Netivot - the Air Force returned to its bombardment of terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip Friday evening. Israeli citizens also want to live in peace.

The Palestinians have to respond some how to their own children and people getting killed everyday. if you haven't noticed the rockets were fired AFTER a Palestinian teen was murdered by Jewish extremists.

1. Ashraf, people might think Palestinians started it because they DID. Sometimes, reality bites.

Why are you in Gaza, Charlie? Just drawing water at a pumpstation? Or are you another of those Swedes who can't stop hating Jews? Perhaps your grandfather was a Nazi sympathizer in WW2, as were most Swedes. Keep up the ancient hatreds!

@7: Gerry, Palestinians, including those in Gaza, also want to live in peace. However, the extremist, Zionist, Israeli government doesn't want peace. Look at what has happened in the last few months since the unity government was formed. Now hardliners talk about assassinating Hamas leaders such as Meshal & Haniyeh, where is the international outcry? A truce can be implemented right now, however Israel needs to listen to the demands of the factions & commit to seeking a just solution with them.
