RAMALLAH (AFP) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday demanded Israel immediately halt its latest offensive against Gaza following a night of airstrikes and militant rocket fire on the Israeli south.

"Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas demanded Israel immediately stop its escalation and the raids on Gaza," said a statement from his office published shortly after midnight by the official WAFA news agency.

He also asked the international community "to immediately intervene to halt this dangerous escalation which would lead the region to more destruction and instability."

Abbas said the Palestinian leadership was making "intensive and urgent calls" to many Arab leaders in the hope of exerting pressure on Israel to deescalate the situation.

Abbas forgot that him and his Unity government are in charge now for Gaza and they are responsible for any rocket and artillery fire emanated from Gaza. In stead of calling UN and International Community, he and his Premier minister need to call police in Gaza and order police to disarm and dismantle terrorist organizations like Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Al-Aqsa Brigade and other operating freely in Gaza. That what can stop Israeli air raids on terrorist infrastructure in Gaza.

Little late Abbas, you have no backing, no power, no air force. All you have is the international community, which means the USA is the leader. Sorry but forget about getting any aid, supplies, help, and halt to the bleeding in Gaza. I pray that the God of all mercies be with you and all that are in Gaza.
