CAIRO (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday evening met with head of the Hamas political bureau Moussa Abu Marzoq and discussed a possible ceasefire with Israel, as well as the Egyptian initiative for peace.

In a meeting in Cairo, they discussed the possible methods of implementing a ceasefire in order to stop the bloodshed in Gaza.

Abbas is scheduled to meet Egyptian president Abdul Fattah Sisi in Cairo as well in order to discuss ways for ending the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, which has claimed 222 Palestinian lives in the last nine days.

The meeting comes after Israel announced the failure of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire on Tuesday, after Hamas officials said they had not been consulted regarding the terms of the agreement and only learned about its existence through the media.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials, however, countered with their own ceasefire proposal, which was conditional on the end of the seven-year long Israeli economic siege of the Gaza Strip.
