JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa mosque compound Thursday and assaulted worshipers while providing security to a group of right-wing Jewish extremists, witnesses said.

Witnesses told Ma'an that a group of settlers entered the Al-Aqsa compounds through the Moroccan Gate while provoking worshipers, who in turn chanted "Allah Akbar," or "God is Great" in Arabic.

Israeli police on the scene then called special police forces to secure the group as they moved through the compound and then out through the Chain Gate, before they reportedly assaulted worshipers with batons and pushed them to the ground causing bruises to many.

The special forces detained an employee who works for the Al-Aqsa endowment office and took him to police station located at the Chain Gate, witnesses said.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld confirmed that there were no clashes but "only Arabs shouting Allah Akbar," adding that the individual was detained for "trying to attack the group" that had entered the compound.

Because of the sensitive nature of the Al-Aqsa compound, Israel maintains a compromise with the Islamic trust that controls it to not allow non-Muslim prayers in the area. Israeli forces regularly escort Jewish visitors to the site, leading to tension with Palestinian worshipers.

The compound, which sits just above the Western Wall plaza, houses both the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque and is the third holiest site in Islam.

It is also venerated as Judaism's most holy place as it sits where Jews believe the First and Second Temples once stood. The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

Al-Aqsa is located in East Jerusalem, a part of the internationally recognized Palestinian territories that have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

"It is also venerated as Judaism's most holy place as it sits where Jews believe the First and Second Temples once stood. The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD." You state 'where Jews believe...' and then declare "The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70AD.' You admit that the Second Temple DID exist and the mosque is on its foundation stones. Thank you. Proof that Jews were there first. Don't force Israel to close it down, which they have every right to do.

"Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound...while providing security to a group of right wing extremists..." Not only will this continue, it will grow exponentially as more orthodox jews are conscripted by the IOF. Hearing someone last week telling his troops they were fighting "God's war" is just a taste of what's to come. What Crusade number will be assigned? Where is Israel's good friend Jordan on this? Al-Aqsa is their responsibility!

(continued) Jordan will make mild objections to the daily outrage committed by Israel at Al-Aqsa but they will not come down hard. After all, Israel has declared its willingness to protect Jordan-and itself-should ISIS spread into that area. So, while many Palestinians are not allowed into the Mosque, Israeli forces and politicians can escort into the Mosque as many right wing settlers cum provocateurs as possible, causing Palestinians to be arrested for objecting. And so it goes.

If Palestinian Muslims cannot control themselves at Al-Aqsa, they will - sooner or later - be banned from the site. When it happens, they will have only themselves to blame.

The 'Third Holiest Site in Islam' isn't even mentioned by name in the Quran. Why is it mentioned over 600 time in the Torah but not once in the Quran? Not once...

David are you stoned. I bet you read some english translation of the Qur'an by some ignorant fool. Probably even online. The Prophet Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him made his journey to the heavens where Al-Aqsa sits. It is mentioned plenty. Get off your butts and read the truth. End the Occupation!

@6) Skillly/UK: David probably isn't "stoned". That is not a requirement to be a hasbaranik. Isn't it sad? After a century of fighting racism, the Zionazis are bringing it back, taking Islamaphobia to new heights - and they have plenty of spokespeople in the good old West and EU to help them foster this hatred of a rich culture that contributed so much to civilization.
