CAIRO (AFP) -- Egypt's foreign ministry denounced Israel's "escalation" in Gaza after the start of a ground offensive on Thursday, and again demanded both sides accept a Cairo proposed truce.

The ground operation after 10 days of Israeli bombardment of the coastal strip is aimed at hitting Hamas, which rejected the truce and continued firing rockets into Israel.

This report does not include Egypt's statement but one can conclude that Egypt, while denouncing the violence, is simply playing the good cop. Hamas didn't accept the proposal to begin with because it was tantamount to acceptance of a return to and official acceptance of a status quo which Hamas' whole mission is to oppose. Egypt suggests cooperation - Hamas doesn't - Israel roughs them up a bit more - Egypt re-enters the room and resumes it's suggestions that Hamas cooperate for it's own good.
