Hanoun area of Gaza during an humanitarian truce on July 26, 2014

Nadia Naser-Najjab has a PhD in Middle East Studies, and is an Associate Research Fellow at the European Center of Palestine Studies-Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter focusing on Palestine and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In the midst of the ongoing onslaught against Gaza -- which has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Palestinians and the wiping out of entire families -- Israel has at times been accused of targeting civilians.

The Israeli armed forces, however, have made much of their "humanitarian" credentials and concern for civilian life, claims which have been most notably exemplified in the argument that they warn civilians of an impending attack through a "knock" -- whether through the firing of a non-explosive projectile at the roof, or through a phone call or text message.

The notion that these warnings are somehow "humanitarian gestures" says much about the extent to which Palestinians have been subject to extensive dehumanization. On the basis of the military's own proud proclamation of this policy you could be forgiven for forming the impression that the residents of Gaza should be grateful to Israel for giving them advance warning of the obliteration of their own homes.

But are these "warned" families even able to escape unharmed?

In order to grasp the extent to which the open celebration of this policy represents a fundamental perversion, we must engage with the most basic precondition of humanitarianism and imagine the position of Gazans.

For a minute, put yourself in the shoes of the Gazans who receive these warnings.

You have just received notice that your home is to be obliterated in a matter of moments. Look around you -- how would you react?

All around you there are things that you need and things which are essential to your life: Where can you go without a passport? What if your employer asks you for your birth certificate? And then there are things which are personal to you: your wedding photograph, a photograph from a now distant childhood, a gift from a friend, your child's graduation pictures. How could you possibly choose? On what basis would you decide what is worth more to you?

You would want to be sure that you left nothing valuable behind, so you would run through the house, aware that you only have a few moments to find what is most valuable to you. You would perhaps tell yourself to focus on the task before you as you empty bags and hurl your clothes and personal belongings across the room; surely you will stop only to take the bare essentials?

It can all be replaced, you tell yourself.

But there is something that cannot be replaced -- the personal significance of the objects which you leave behind: the small things you hoped to hand onto your own children, the heirlooms which your own parents had passed onto you. Perhaps your hands will pass over these objects in a fleeting moment, a final farewell to a past you must now leave behind. Only afterwards will you realize just how much of yourself has been left behind.

Even the closeness of the moment fails to fully concentrate your mind: who can be entirely practical at times like this? Your hands knock jars off the shelves, and stupidly clutch at useless cooking utensils. You enter the bathroom and grasp at a towel and toothbrush.

Momentarily your mind snaps back to reality: a holiday? Is that where you think you are going? Chiding yourself, you run back into the living room, stopping by a chair -- again your senses snap you back, reprimanding your utter absurdity: do you really think you can take a chair with you?

Suddenly you awake, as if from a dream. Was it three minutes or 56 seconds? Who can be sure? It's not as if you can ask the person with their finger on the trigger when you will die. You grab what is most valuable to you, what you could never imagine leaving behind.

In a split second you take your children's hands and run from the house, leaving everything else behind you, knowing that you will never return and facing the unknown.

No wonder we hear the Gazans who survive talk about the slow death they experience.

This was an avoidable tragedy. The people of Gaza COULD have demanded their elected government STOP attacking Israel. They didn't. The NEWS MEDIA COULD have demanded Hamas stop its homicidal attacks on Israel, but they didn't. The other Muslim countries COULD have offered carrots to Hamas and Gaza IF they stopped attacking Israel, but they didn't. Now Israel is attacking Hamas to put an end to their attacks. NOBODY has any right to tell them to stop. You were silent then, be silent now.

better a warning than none at all. besides it would help if hamas doesn't FORCE people to go to their rooftops, after being warned.

After having "put yourself in the shoes of the Gazans who receive these warnings", try putting yourself in the shoes of the Israelis who receive NO warnings from the Hamas terrorists that rockets are being fired at innocent Israeli civilians. They may have only 15 seconds warning from Israeli sirens that rockets fired from Gaza are already in flight toward them.

If you build a military infrastructure in a civilian area to better kill Israelis, and then use it, expect someone to attack the military infrastructure with all the death and destruction which will inevitably occur. If Gaza did not want the death and destruction on its side, it should not have attacked Israel. If you want more death and destruction keep shooting at Israel. But please no more crocodile tears.

It's sad. very sad. But this is a war. When Hamas decides to start this escalation or to reject every proposal for a ceasefire, they should have known that they put their own people in this situation. You can't go into a war and then complain that it makes you suffer. The Palestinians should decide whether they want to achieve their goals by war or by diplomacy. If you chose war this is what you get. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Sorry, but Abbas' way is more reasonable...

Naser-Najjab mentions the IDF, but not one word of the cause of the conflict. Namely the the Hamas’ military wing al-Qassam Brigades and other renegade radical Islamic Jihadist terrorist organisations, the al-Quds Brigades military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees and the al-Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades. Carefully cosseted sheltered in their underground air-con bunkers, with food, medical supplies, blankets, water and fuel for their electric supply at the Arab's expense above ground.

The Holy Family Latin Church in Gaza has just received an evacuation order warning them that Israei is planning to bomb their neighbourhood tonight. In a message, a priest writes: "The church of Gaza has received an order to evacuate.. they will bomb the Zeitun area & the people are already fleeing. The problem is that the priest Fr George & the three nuns of Mother Teresa have 29 handicapped children and nine old ladies who can't move. "How will they manage to leave?? If anyone can intercede

Hello Nadia. I understand your point of view, but.. Did Hamas gives warning about there attacks before they fire missiles at our home?!! I'm assure not! Never! In approximately 15 years we didn't get any warnings or mercy from them! Our blood is brighter?!! We don't have childrens?!! Tell me where you hear of a state that's under rockets fire or anything else for that manner that gives their enemies some kind of warnings?! If they do that to an arab nation they'll be finished within days!!!

12 ) Oz / Israel

-> We're under fire before we started this operation, we gave on the media warnings about our intentions to act if they don't going to stop launching missiles! At first we give them 48 hours to stop.. And they continue afterwards gave additional 36 hours.. Did they stop?! No! We started giving warning to the population! They had time to evacuate to the south of the strip, and to take theirs belonging before! Hamas didn't let them leave! Warnings that be a trial for those who leave their homes!!

Israelis have alert air raid sirens, and Iron Dome and bomb shelters. Israelis also have modern American made weapons systems with laser targeting and GPS, to assure that when Israelis target civilians and civilian assets, those things and people are hit and destroyed. You are blaming 10 and 12 year-olds and civilian parents for their government not having American designed equipment and safety.

Hamas using the support aid they getting from the: Arab-league, Iran, US and UN for development of weapons, training, and construct assault tunnels. Instead of giving aid for their own population! All for targeting Israeli citizens! When some of their leaders living in wealth abroad in 5 star hotels!! (Israel) on the other hand providing electricity, water and medical operations in Israeli hospitals! If you think I'm a layer.. Check it! If Fatah was in control maybe the siege be over

Hamas dragged all of us to it! I believe there's a solution, we just need to find it! As an Israeli I can tell everyone that no one here love war! To the Catholic Father: Call UNRWA and let them know, ask for help in transferring your disabled and elderly. Perhaps this conflict is one of those instances where justice takes precedent over mercy. After all, Gaza took advantage of Israel's mercy in delivering building materials after the last conflict by diverting those materials into the construction of attack tunnels and weapons bunkers.

Question to Isrealies that who is the Occupier.who is expending his boundaries to crushing Palestine State.See map before 1947, No Jews state was in world. In 1947 (under UN adaptation Plan)you get piece of land in Palestine. then only after 1 year 1948 you start clashes and start snatching land.Peoples who are already living there, now become terrorist, and you invaders, and occupiers become the owner. after 1967 and now see where is Palestine.Only Gaza and West bank (actually are refugees camps)

#33 answer: I'm not a religious person but the answer is relevant to that: the bible a 3,000 years old book is the holly book of Jewish and Christians. tells the historical events of our religions (Jewish, Muslim, Christians). In this region the Hebrews and Arabs and others lived together for generations. build our cities temples chapels and mosques here. We'll lived together in time of war and peace! In the periods of time empires rolled this region. eventually they exiled the Jewish people-->

The largest is the temple wall that's still standing for 2,000 years!! except that there is more like artifacts, coins, writings, graves, temples etc, I'm not an historian but that's the truth of history and it can't be denied check history books!

Outliar/USA - 'Israel's mercy' allowed only enough materials for UNWRA projects (but only for propaganda purposes). Approx 250 loads of building materials in all, not enough to build attack tunnels and weapons bunkers. The enterprising Gazans must have got their materials from elsewhere to build this 'City under Gaza' that we keep hearing about. Must have taken them years to build...

80% of the people of Gaza are refugees from what became Israel in 1948. They were driven out by terrorist Zionist militias whose task was to rid Palestine of Palestinian native people. Israel owes it to them to let them return to their homes, towns and villages in the land they came from. But, Israel forbids the Right of Return to Palestinians. Perhaps, this is precisely why the Israeli strategy is to bring in their grizzly "POGROM MOWERS", as part of their OPERATION GENOCIDE campaign

Gaza has not been occupied since 2005. Yes it has been closely monitiored and limited to its imports but that is simply because from the time the IDF pulled out rockets were fired into israel from a closer proximity. The seige by Israel is to prevent Hamas and other militants from arming themselves but they still did through tunnels into Egypt. Egypt is not at war with Gaza. So go complain to Mr. Sisi about that border crossing. Gaza xould have flourished in 2005. Hamas had other plans.

43, Carine, wherever the building supplies came from, and some certainly were diverted humanitarian aid, they went into building attack tunnels and hardened weapon bunkers rather than infrastructure or bomb shelters for ordinary Gazans. They were a state under British control. Look at the old passports. Look at the old Jaffa export materials. They would all state State of Palestine. And no, it's not like they didn't want to rule themselves. After WW1 the British took over the area from the Ottomans. You should know as your govt still uses ottoman law to take land in some cases. The British were at some point going to officially make them on their own, but plans changed obviously.

As for the electricity and such, look at the Oslo Accords. Pals are NOT ALLOWED to drill for their own water, etc. They have no choice but to buy from IL. But let' say there wasn't a state...does the still give IL the right to do what they did and are doing? Did that give them the right to take over Jaffa orchards and kick the ppl from their lands, but let some work on lands they used to own? look I am not saying I am for Hamas or anything. To know what ur govt is doing in ur name as I am mine.the solution is simple: end occupation, go to 1967 borders with negotiated land swaps and have international control over borders til everything is settled, or permanently. How to get there....well that's the hard part because politics is such a dirty game that really serves no one but the gov'ts. As for 1967 borders...u know that's letting the pals have only 22% of their land back right? I think IL can give them that much at least.

Hamas, like the french resistance of WWII, has to use terrorist violence against the occupying power which is racist in ideology and has employed terrorism against the population of Palestine since the nineteen thirties. The Israeli terror state has pursued lebensraum and expects to ethnically cleanse and eliminate the people of Palestine. They treat anything but violence with contempt. They can only manage this aim with the acquiescence of European racist states such as The UK Germany etc

I see the Hasbara crowd is out in force. And do you know who funds these apologists for Zionist mass murder? And the IDF butchers of babies, little girls, whole families? That's right: the American taxpayer. There is, however, one ray of sunlight on the horizon: when the Dollar Dies, Zion-in-Palestine will soon follow. And then there will be a reckoning. In both Palestine and America.

My gosh, the mind-bending era we live in. Up is down. Right is wrong. Hamas should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

What a joke. When the IDF went in they found most of the empty homes boobytrapped. Many of of the tunnels started in the basements of homes. This is not hamas and the gazan population as two separate things. They have been completely intertwined since the beginning. Hamas IS an expression of the desire of the gazan population, which celebrates with dancing in the streets and giving out candy when innocents are slaughtered elsewhere. Sad. Yeah, that is pretty sad.

Unfortunately the Jews who comment here are brainwashed by their own propaganda machine which started with "a land without a people for a people without a land". And so it goes on. They are so blinded by their own lies and perpetual beating of the holocaust drum that they do not see that they themselves have become today's Nazis who's goal is the "jewish" utopia. Until they change their racist vision they will not know a days peace.

What a vibrant little board this is.All this could have been avoided had Israel abided by its obligations under International Law and withdrew from Territory occupied in the Six Day War. Israel has no legitimate claim to Palestinian Territory and it knows it. Theodor Meron Legal Advisor to the Eshkol Government advised that settlements violated the explicit principals of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Rockets are a symptom of the cause. The cause is the illegal Occupation and illegal settlement of Palestinian Territory. Fourth Geneva Convention clearly states it. Resolution 242 reminds Israel that acquisition of territory by force is inadmissible under International Law. Israel claims to be a Democracy yet when the UN arrives at a Democratic decision re Israel,Israel refuses to comply or gets America to veto. Israel has blown it in Gaza. Israel has been humiliated by ill equipped resistance.
