WASHINGTON (AFP) -- US President Barack Obama urged Hamas to show they were serious about wanting a ceasefire Friday and urged the Islamist militants to release an Israeli soldier reportedly captured earlier in the day.

"I think it's going to be very hard to put a ceasefire back together again if Israelis and the international community can't feel confident that Hamas can follow through on a ceasefire commitment," he said.

I hate to say it, but my president looks pretty stupid saying he "can't feel confident that Hamas can follow through on a ceasefire.." Hello? Pres. Obama? News flash: Hamas is a world-recognized terrorist organization (on the USA's terrorist list) and will say and do anything it feels like to further its jihad against Israel. It has stated as much. You are JUST NOW 'not feeling confident?' Hamas rockets have been landing in Israel for 9 years! Hamas = death to Jews AND Gazans! Got it now??

Has anyone ever felt confident that Hamas wanted anything besides death and destruction? Just give some more "assurances." How naive is Obama? Dumb question.

Mr. Obama, if you want a truce, force IDF to pull out of Gaza and lift the blockade. If IDF does not listen to reason, stop financing their criminal enterprises. After you treat Palestinians as human beings, like they deserve to be treated, THEN ask for a truce and start real negotiations. Negotiating with someone while you keep a gun to their head is not a negotiation at all. And the Palestinians have a gun to their heads for decades now. A gun "Made in U.S.A".

I would imagine the Palestinians also find it hard to trust when US replenishes Israel's diminishing stocks of weapons, then calls itself an honest broker in the conflict. Mehdi Hassan was right, he said on Twitter (paraphrasing): maybe its time for Obama to consider returning his Nobel Prize. Just a thought.
