JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli police shot and killed a Palestinian man who rammed an excavator into a bus in East Jerusalem Monday, knocking the bus on its side and running another man over, medics and police said.

They said the man who was run over by the excavator was killed as well.

"A 25-year-old man was run over by the excavator and killed, and the bus driver was moderately to lightly injured," emergency services spokesman Zaki Heller told AFP, saying another four people were lightly hurt in the incident which police described as a "terror attack."

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld tweeted: "One person confirmed dead in terror attack in Jerusalem. Terrorist also shot and killed at scene. Forensics working at scene."

Rosenfeld later tweeted that the driver was a Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem in his 20s.

Video footage of the incident seems to show that police opened fire at the excavator before it knocked the bus over.

"He hit a bus and turned it onto its side and as a result three people were lightly injured who were on the bus," Jerusalem police chief Yossi Pariente told reporters at the scene, adding that the bus was nearly empty when it was hit.

"Two police happened to be in the area ... they got out of their car and fired at the (excavator) and as a result (the driver) was killed," he said.

At the scene, the driver's body could be seen lying on the ground covered with a white plastic bag and a prayer rug, an AFP correspondent said.

Nearby, the bulldozer's windshield was completely destroyed.

AFP contributed to this report.

I disagree with random acts of violence, but honestly, what do you expect?! You've just bombed the hell out of Gaza, in something that constitute war crimes. Maybe he just lost loved ones there. Or maybe he knew of the numbers of children killed. This is enough to push any sane person into insanity. Even so, I would still like to see a full investigation of this. What if it was an accident? Not that I expect fairness from Israeli authorities at this point.

Yes, what if it was a tragic accident. The two involved (the Heredi Jew & the Palestinian Muslim) were working together. Suppose the driver simply lost control of the digger. Reports say that the driver of the digger was shot before the digger hit the bus. Possibly an over reaction of the trigger happy police. Full investigation yes, but will the truth out, probably not. Too much hatred.

I wonder if Maan News checkes every piece of news from any israeli source against independent sources. I saw this on Norwegian NRK news yesterday, and it struck me as identical to an incident which happened when I was in Jerusalem in 2008, on approx. 2. july. Israel can send old things out as new, most medias don't check. But there is a very good chance for Maan news to go into everything, and at some point catch them in a lie. That would make headline news all over, if you can prove them lying.

Anybody who goes to youtube will see 10 different angles of the construction worker clearly attacking the bus after he already killed the poor guy walking in the street. It was clearly first degree murder, and the Palestinian is now up in heaven having a wonderful time with his 72 virgins. Then again, suppose Hamas really does strap Palestinian babies to their rockets to increase the body count, eh #2? And since #3 has been proven wrong by the facts, we'll just ignore her.
