GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Hamas member of the Palestinian parliament on Saturday insisted that the group was determined to maintain its military arsenal in the face of Israeli calls for it to disarm, calling the group's weapons the "only guarantee" for Gaza's future.

"The weapons of the resistance are the only guarantee for Palestinians to break Gaza's siege and rebuild Gaza together," Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council Ismail al-Ashqar said on Saturday.

Al-Ashqar said in a statement released by the media office of the parliament that "Palestinians and the factions of the resistance demand to unconditionally rebuild the Gaza Strip," highlighting that he and "all Palestinians" trust that the resistance is "able to achieve it's conditions and to force Israel and it's allies to accept them."

The Palestinian delegation at ceasefire talks in Cairo has insisted that the eight-year long blockade of the Gaza Strip be lifted as a condition for any ceasefire, which Israel has so far refused to consider.

Israel has instead countered that reconstruction of the Gaza Strip -- which has been pounded by more than 30 days of Israeli airstrikes and shelling from land and sea -- be conditional on the disarmament of Hamas, otherwise it will continue to limit the import of basic materials like concrete.

Al-Ashqar said that the "victory of the resistance in the battlefield proves the failure of both the Israeli and the American security systems," stressing the importance of "investing the field victory of the resistance" politically and on "holding on the resistance's terms."

What purpose do the arms of Hamas serve. They were not able to protect the people of Gaza over the last four weeks

The weapons of the resistance are the only guarantee for Palestinians to break Gaza siege. HA! HA! This guy is out of touch! The Weapons will only Guarantee Gaza Destruction! How many times has GAZA been rebuilt only to be destroyed again and again, Gaza had a Airport & Sea port but the weapons caused them to be destroyed. Wake up people these weapons are useless and only bring harm to the people. The way forward is peace! Peace and Prosperity vs. War & destruction. This is a no Brainer!

Let's see, an armed-to-the-teeth Hamas hasn't managed to turn Gaza into the Garden of Eden over the last 9 years, so maybe, just maybe, trying it Israel's way might provide better results. That's rational thinking. But that would mean Hamas's jihadist desires to remove Israel from their perceived 'dar al-Islam' would have to end, and their sole reason for existing would be gone. Can Hamas turn into a benevolent governing body? Or has their years of brainwashing young men made it impossible?

Some who lost loved ones, many who will be rebuilding for years and all who will be living awful lives and paying exorbitant prices for everything may well disagree.

Any occupied people have the right to resist their occupiers with weaponry, even the people of Gaza in case you Israeli propagandists did not know. And, yes, Gaza is still under occupation because borders, airspace and sea is controlled by the occupying power. The West Bank is de facto occupied directly. Also, only 44 percent of Gaza currently is available to its citizens due to the huge buffert zones created by Israel in the area.

#1 David "Israel's way." Well, why not? A level 'playing field' WMD, extra judicial killings, flaunt international law, same handouts from Uncle Sam, eh David?

The west bank has tried to go it Israel's way for decades to no avail. It's terribly sad, but historically militant action does push israel into making concessions. Granted at a high cost. Not my place to say if it is worth it.
