ACRE, Israel (Ma'an) -- Israeli police early Sunday detained a Palestinian man suspected of developing improvised weapons in northern Israel, a police spokeswoman said.

Spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement that police found improvised handguns and ammunition in a car near the village of Shaab near Acre (Akka).

Police took the driver -- a Palestinian citizen of Israel from the village of al-Mashhad -- into custody, the statement said.

It said the man admitted he had developed the weapons and was testing their efficiency.

The suspect was to appear in court on Sunday.
