GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian unity government will take responsibility for the reconstruction of Gaza following Israel's devastating month-long assault, deputy prime minister Ziad Abu Amr said Friday.

"The Palestinian government will take responsibility for the Gaza Strip and its needs," the deputy prime minister said during a visit to Gaza's Shifa hospital.

Abu Amr visited the hospital with Minister of Public Works, Mufid al-Hasayneh, Minister of Labor, Mamun Abu Shahla, Salim al-Saqqa the Minister of Justice and Haifa al-Agha, Minister of Women's Affairs.

The official praised the "heroic" actions of medical staff in Gaza while health minister Yoused Abu al-Rish said the visit was a boost amid the suffering of medics who were injured or killed during Israel's offensive.

Medics and nurses had not been paid for months before Israel's offensive began, Abu al-Rish added.

Abu Amr arrived in Gaza on Tuesday in his first visit since the formation of a new unity government.

The visit marks the first time Israel has allowed officials from the Palestinian unity government to enter Gaza through Erez since its formation.

Hamas and the PLO, dominated by Fatah, signed a surprise reconciliation agreement in April to end years of rivalry.

The rebuilding of Gaza is the responsibility of Israel, which destroyed it, and the United States, which funded the destruction.

Can someone explain to me how a two-state solution is going to work when it relies on Israel 'good-will' in allowing Palestinians to move freely between Gaza & The West Bank> Never going to happen! :/

@3: There never has been any Israeli 'good will' towards the Palestinians, merely self interest. However much of the world is sick of Zionism & US support of it (in addition to its interference in the Arab world). The UN needs to sanction Israel hard & the EU needs to provide more support to Palestine in terms of technical security equipment (such as the Dutch scanners that were offered) & help with international monitors to help the safe passage of goods & people between the two places. EUBAM?

2, Carolyn, in truth, the responsibility to rebuild Gaza rests with Hamas, which started this conflict and prolonged this conflict. Without Gaza launching missiles, this conflict would not have happened.

Outlier, Gaza and the West Bank are considered occupied territories by the Israelis. Regardless of who started it (and the Israelis admit Hamas wasn't responsible for the 3 murdered teenagers which IS what started this), the occupying force is responsible for the health and welfare of the people they occupy. Since shelter and electricity and water are intrinsic to health and welfare, Israel is responsible. With the number of dead and injured, I'd so so far failed miserably.
