RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Chairman of the parliament of El Salvador Sigfrido Reyes Morales on Friday visited a number of injured people from Gaza at al-Makassed Hospital in Jerusalem, the latest in a number of official visits in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

According to a statement from the Palestinian Legislative Council, during the visit Reyes condemned Israeli "atrocities" against the Gaza Strip and confirmed that his government and the people of El Salvador would continue to support the Palestinian people in their efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state.

Reyes was accompanied in his visit by Palestinian member of parliament from Jerusalem Bernard Sabella and secretary-general of the Palestinian parliament Ibrahim Khreisha.

Reyes also visited the family of Palestinian teenager Muhammad Abu Khdeir, who was kidnapped and burned to death in a hate crime by a group of right-wing Jewish Israelis, in Jerusalem's Shufat.

As he offered condolences to the family, Reyes expressed his strong condemnation of the "odious crime of murdering an innocent child in the ugliest and most barbaric way."

Reyes also toured the Old City of Jerusalem and told his escorts that the city should be open to all. He said he was shocked when he saw Israel's "apartheid wall" and settlements built on Palestinian lands.

The Salvadoran leader reportedly said he would convey what he saw with his very eyes to the whole world, promising to do as much as he could to establish a Salvadoran embassy in Jerusalem.

A number of Latin American countries have strong relationships with Palestine, and during the most recent Israeli assault on Gaza leaders from across Central and South American condemned Israeli actions.

The ties are strongest with those countries whose governments currently maintain leftist affiliations, part of the global left's historical solidarity with anti-colonial causes in general and the Palestinian cause in particular.
