CAIRO (Ma'an) -- Palestinian sources in Cairo told Ma'an that a ceasefire agreement is being prepared after 15 days of Egypt-sponsored negotiations.

The Israeli delegation left Cairo to inform cabinet ministers of the details.

The sources said Egyptian legal consultants were preparing the documents.

Egypt was expected to announce the developments late Monday, they said.

A six-hour negotiations session was held on Monday following a nine-hour session on Sunday night, sources close to the ceasefire talks told Ma'an.

There were no major disagreements among the Palestinian factions, the sources said.

The five-day ceasefire expires at midnight on Monday.

The aim is to broker a long-term arrangement to halt over a month of bloody fighting which erupted on July 8 although both sides have largely lowered their guns since Aug. 4 thanks to a series of temporary truce arrangements.

Ahead of the deadline, President Mahmoud Abbas was travelling to Doha Monday for talks with exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal and Qatari emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.

Qatar is a key backer of Hamas, the de facto rulers of Gaza.

As diplomatic efforts intensified, Gaza's health ministry said the death toll from the fighting rose above 2,000 as more people succumbed to injuries. The figures showed 2,016 people had been killed and another 10,196 wounded.

Among the dead were 541 children, 250 women and 95 elderly men.

Separately, the Israeli army confirmed that five of 64 soldiers killed in combat had died as a result of "friendly fire."

AFP contributed to this report.

The next step is to remove Hamas from power in Gaza. It is the only way that Gazans will find peace and prosperity. Hamas already declared that their goal is death: https://twitter.com/Qassam_English/statuses/500679981341478912 The only way forward for Palestine is to get rid of Hamas. Hamas does not want peace for Palestinians - it wants to destory Israel and join ISIS in an Islamic caliphate. Or they will die trying and take Palestine to the grave with them. Stop Hamas now.

May I remind everyone that Hamas is the absolute result of the occupation. Israel wanted to break up the PLO after Arafat died and they needed to weaken the PLO..never thinking that they had weakened the PLO so much that when free elections were called for, the people voted for Hamas who had been helping the people..Israel by its policies never gave Abbas anything...and when you don't get anything, just the status quo & life is not worth living you go with someone who is at least going to fight

Gazans will have plenty of time to contemplate the advantages and the disadvantages of Hamas rule as it pertains to precipitating and prolonging this conflict. As Pogo said, "we have met the enemy and he is us."
