RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Four rockets fired from Gaza late Tuesday hit an illegal Israeli settlement west of Ramallah, causing a fire, witnesses told Ma'an.

Witnesses said a rocket landed in the settlement of Modiin Illit, and that Israeli ambulances and firetrucks rushed to the area.

They said they saw clouds of smoke rising from the settlement, and added that rocket warning sirens could be heard from several Israeli settlements in the Ramallah area.

An Israeli police spokesman did not answer calls seeking comment.

A temporary ceasefire between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in Gaza collapsed hours before it was to expire on Tuesday when Israel said rockets from the Strip landed near Beersheba.

Israeli forces responded with airstrikes, and delegations from both sides left Cairo, where they had met for indirect negotiations to reach a long-term truce.

At least ten Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes in Gaza since the ceasefire collapsed.

The Israeli army said in a statement that over 80 rockets had been fired from the Strip in the same period. There were no reports of injuries.

It added that it had struck "60 terror sites" across Gaza in response to rocket fire.

During ceasefire talks, Palestinians have insisted that any long-term truce include the end of Israel's eight-year siege on the Gaza Strip, the release of dozens of prisoners rearrested by Israel after being released in 2011, the re-opening of a seaport and airport in Gaza, and the creation of a safe passage between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Members of the Palestinian delegation had warned Tuesday that if Israel continued to "refuse" to make concessions, the ceasefire could collapse.

Concessions? Israel asked only 1 concession - that terrorists in Gaza stop firing rockets at Israeli population centers. Hamas refused and fired more rockets instead. Because of Hamas, Gaza continues to suffer and there is no peace. Get rid of Hamas and Palestine will have a future. Stay with Hamas and you doom the Palestinians to suffer, because Hamas says "Our goal is Jihad - victory or martyrdom". We will deny them their victory and guarantee them their martrydom.

Brian Cohen, on 14 August the Israeli Army shelled Khan Yunis farmland in al-Qarara and the Israeli Navy continued to open fire on Palestinian fishing boats. On 15 August, the Israel Army opened fire on east al-Farahin farmland in the Khan Yunis district. In the West Bank the Israeli Army opened live fire in five areas. The worst attack, in the Bab al-Zawiya area of Hebron, resulted in 17 people being wounded. On 16 August, the Israeli Navy again attacked Palestinian fishing boats...

funny how history repeats itself. i still remember the same statement being used against Arafat." Get rid of Arafat and Palestine will have peace". Israel assassinated Arafat and Palestine is still under occupation. the truth of the matter is ISRAEL DOES NOT WANT PEACE.

Concession? The biggest concession given to Israel was to accept the 1967 borders which saw Israel occupying 4/5th of the Palestinian's land! I think the least Israel can do is to ease the borders so that the Palestinians can have a life!

Brian Cohen is lying when has stated, "oncessions? Israel asked only 1 concession - that terrorists in Gaza stop firing rockets at Israeli population centers. Hamas refused and fired more rockets instead. Because of Hamas, Gaza continues to suffer and there is no peace." The terrorist and genocidal state of Israel refused to lift the blockade, allow seaport and airport for Gaza, and release Palestinian prisoners. It has also killed the truce by attacking Palestinians.

Hamas has not refused ceasefire, but the palestinian delegation (Hamas,Fatah and others) was preparing the palestinian Initiative in Cairo, meanwhile Israel had begun airstrikes as a reaction to 3 (unknown) missles fired from gaza, as Israil claims. after they agree on some points in the negotiations, your delegation start to fudge.

@4: I agree jj, even Khalid Meshaal has said he is ready to co exist with Israel. However Bibi seems to prefer war, so that he can cry victim. Stay strong Gaza, do not give in. Oslo is dead, say NO to demilitarisation, if you do Gaza is finished. Lieberman & Bibi have their sights on your natural resources for sure. Nothing lasts for ever, especially not Zionism. Blockade has to be lifted eventually, International Law dictates it is illegal & Israel has committed War Crimes. Abbas go to ICC NOW!
