CAIRO (AFP) -- Egyptian mediators have proposed a new ceasefire in Gaza that would open the blockaded enclave's crossings and allow in aid and reconstruction materials, a senior Palestinian official said on Monday.

The Palestinians, including the de facto Hamas rulers of the enclave, would be willing to accept such a deal if Israel does, the official told AFP.

The proposal would defer to a later date negotiations on disputed points that have prevented a long-term ceasefire deal, he added.

An Egyptian official confirmed that mediators have contacted the Palestinians and Israel with a new proposal.

"There is an idea for a temporary ceasefire that opens the crossings, allows aid and reconstruction material, and the disputed points will be discussed in a month," the Palestinian official said.

"We would be willing to accept this, but are waiting for the Israeli response to this proposal," he said, requesting anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Another Palestinian official said Egypt might invite Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams to return to Cairo in 48 hours.

A previous ceasefire to end the devastating conflict in Gaza collapsed on August 19 after Egyptian mediators were unable to bridge the gaps between the two sides.

The conflict, now in its 49th day, has killed more than 2,100 Palestinians and 68 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

Hamas has insisted that any long-term truce must end the eight-year blockade of Gaza and allow for an airport in the coastal strip that is flanked by Israel and Egypt.

Israel says it wants Hamas to disarm, something the militants have refused to discuss.

After accusing Israel of a conspiracy, a senior Hamas official, Saleh al-Arouri, who is based in Turkey, admitted that his group had carried out the “heroic” act of kidnapping and murdering Naftali Fraenkel, Eyal Yifrach and Gil-Ad Shear in the Hebron area last June. “I praise the brave action that the al-Qassam Brigades carried out, the kidnapping of the three settlers to Hebron,” Saleh al-Arouri said in the recording. This crime triggered a major IDF offensive against Hamas on the West Bank.

#5 With Rosh Hashanah only four weeks away, Israel must be praying like mad. Interesting that it also relates to sacrifice, judgement & a new year ahead. Hamas could choose to accept the ceasefire & give the people of Gaza some respite on humanitarian grounds. Hamas really has nothing to lose, but everything to gain now right now, especially with Iran threatening to arm the W. Bank, rockets coming over from Syria/Lebanon & worldwide support from ordinary people. Peace comes to those who want it.

Israel won't agree to anything that would force them to ease their stranglehold on the enclave (aka, an open-air prison)! They'll come up with some bogus excuse to back out again, pretend they are the victim, and then continue stealing more Palestinian land and killing innocent people...just as they've been doing since the early 1900's.

1- THERE WILL BE NO OPENING of the blockaded enclave's crossings, UNLESS THE BLOCKADED ENCLAVE ACCEPTS PEACE with Israel, and 2- GOING TO THE ICC SHOULD achieve nothing positive for Gaza, and nothing negative for Israel (since only Gaza militant fighters are targeted), but it is likely to PROVE HAMAS GUILTY OF WAR CRIMES, regardless of the high death and destruction in Gaza !!

* HAMAS WILL ALWAYS DICTATE death, destruction, and perpetual WAR, and though Israel wants peace, it doesn't expect it, and * GAZA "IS PRAYING HAMAS STOPPING THE FIRE", which is why so many are collaborating with Israel to make it happen !!

I wanted to say that all of Palestine is under control of a brutal, barbaric occupying gov.In cases like that the People needs to be armed. It is outrageous for Israel to say that the different groups in Gaza should be disarmed.Israel is the aggressor so if anyone is to be disarmed it should be Israel. The demands of the People of Gaza needs to be met in any peace agreement. The six mile limit for the fishermen of Gaza is an insult to the fishermen. It should be 15 miles.
