BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces fired warning shots near the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, Israel's army said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said warning shots were fired in the air after a crowd of Palestinians began hurling rocks at the security fence.

The crowd dispersed following the gunfire, she added.

The incident took place east of Gaza City in an area adjacent to the Nahal Oz kibbutz, Israeli media reported.

The Israeli security buffer zone around Gaza was meant to be reduced following Tuesday's ceasefire agreement, with farmers initially reporting that they were able to access their fields 100 meters from the border fence.

Before Operation Protective Edge, Israeli forces routinely opened fire on those who entered the buffer zone, which ranged from 500-1500 meters from the border and encompassed 17 percent of Gaza's total land area.

In March, a mentally disabled 57-year-old woman was shot dead by Israeli soldiers after wandering near the buffer zone east of Khan Younis.

After everything, still caged in.

Maybe the crowd want the security fence down. Israel is so trigger happy that they'll fire on anything without thinking first.

Maybe nobody told these folks that 'truce' mean no rock throwing. Or, since the Hamas spokesman already announced that their long-term goal is the 'liberation' of Jerusalem, they're just getting ready for the mass attack on the fence and are testing for weak spots.

The word used by Arabs for a truce is "hudna". It doesn't mean what Westerners and others would like to believe. A hudna is a one-sided agreement, which binds the enemy (in this case Israel) to ceasing all violence, but allows the Arab side to end/break/void the hudna at any time without any prior notice.

Ah yes the always equal argument that is I shot at yhem cause they threw stones at me. Stones the new WMD in israeli eyes. What a joke. They just want the ceasefire to break down. They will keep agitating until gaza fire back and then cry from the roof tops. It was the mean palestinians. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious. Israel doesn't do ceasefires.

Hey Carol and Joe - the easiest way to remove the "cage" or take down the "fence" is for Hamas to accept the peace process and declare that its goal is peace, not killing Israelis. You two fools simply can't accept that Hamas is indeed committed to war, and you think that we Israelis should simply open the gates so that Hamas can get more weapons with which to kill us. That's why you are foreign commenters and not decision makers. You want to see people dead.
