GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israel's military offensive on the Gaza Strip caused $40.4 million worth of damages to religious sites and cemeteries in Gaza, the Palestinian Economic Council for Development and Reconstruction said Thursday.

Over 73 mosques were completely destroyed, 205 partially destroyed, two churches damaged, and 10 cemeteries severely damaged, a report by PECDAR said.

In total, over one third of Gaza's mosques were damaged.

The Latin Church in Gaza City suffered partial damage as a result of airstrikes, while the al-Omari Mosque in Jabaliya was completely destroyed.

The mosque is believed to have stood on the same site since 647 AD, and the portico and minaret date back to the medieval Mamluk period, or at least 500 years.

Over three times as many religious sites were damaged in Operation Protective Edge compared to Israel's deadly 2008-9 offensive on the besieged enclave.

Hamas thought that firing rockets from mosques and schools would prevent Israel from responding. How's that working out for you, Hamas? A couple mosques in need of repair? What did you think was going to happen? How dare you think the world is going to pay to rebuild after your insanity? Live in the rubble - it's all you deserve. And if any nation IS stupid enough to send money, at least make sure Hamas doesn't get its slimy hands on it.

They need to stop using places of worship as weapon storage facilities

@3: Military use of Mosques by Hamas is not an exception. Hamas and other terrorist organizations systematically use many mosques in the Gaza Strip for military and political purposes. Mosques in the Gaza Strip are used not only for worship but also for diverse military and political purposes, such as recruiting operatives for terrorist activity, storing weapons, meeting places for terrorist operatives, points of departure for terrorist attacks, training sites, places for firing rockets.

@4 No evidence of that presented whatsoever - you're just repeating hasbara w/o any basis in fact - typical. The reality is that Israel needs to stop commiting war crimes by targeting children, civilians, hospitals, UN facilities, ambulances, schools, mosques, churches, top 275 Gaza businesses, etc.
